Pest outbreaks in Bangladesh are causing a rapid increase in the sale of pesticides. Farmers are turning to chemical products such as fungicides, herbicides and insecticides to manage pests, which they often buy from their local agro-input dealer. However, these chemicals can harm the environment and human health. In Bangladesh, pesticide risks are significant due to their extensive agricultural use and a lack of need-based regulation.

Agro-dealers in Nepal can play a pivotal role in reducing the risks associated with pesticide use, such as harm to human health and the environment. They are a key source of pest management advice for smallholder farmers. However, many lack access to accurate information about risk reduction and safer plant protection products. How can we implement better risk reduction strategies by working with agro-dealers? One way is through voluntary sustainability standards (VSSs).

Unemployment remains a significant issue faced by young people worldwide. In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) in particular, the youth unemployment rate is 10.17% meaning that one in ten 15-24 year-olds cannot find work. Young women and vulnerable youth, in particular, face societal barriers that limit their job opportunities. Underemployment (i.e. not having a job that matches skill or education level) is also a significant challenge for young people.

Plant clinics in Malawi are empowering smallholder farmers to manage crop pests more effectively. In 2025, scientists published a paper in Plant Environment Interactions reviewing the impact of plant clinics on farmers in Malawi. The clinics have created a frontline support system for smallholders in remote, rural locations. In addition, they have helped to strengthen and sustain Malawi’s agricultural extension system.

A strategic partnership with the CABI-led PlantwisePlus programme has boosted plant health services in Ethiopia. Recently, a refresher course held in October delivered plant clinic training to 61 of the country’s plant doctors and plant health experts, a quarter of whom were women. CABI and the government of Ethiopia jointly delivered the three-day PlantwisePlus capacity-strengthening workshop in Adama.

This One Health Day, we look at the interconnected challenges and innovative solutions that shape the health of people, animals, plants and ecosystems in Burundi. One Health in Burundi presents a solution to a complex set of challenges. This East African country faces health issues that threaten its people, livestock, and crops. Agriculture is the nation’s backbone, providing almost 95% of the country’s food and contributing to over one-third of its GDP.

On 13 October 2025, PlantwisePlus and its core donors co-hosted a networking reception at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) headquarters in Rome to celebrate five years of the programme. Following the FAO’s Science and Innovation Forum,  diplomats from countries across the global North and South, FAO colleagues, and agricultural researchers came together to reflect on the programme’s achievements and ambitions over the next five years.

Across Vietnam’s rice paddies, coffee farms, and pepper plantations, CABI, in partnership with the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VAAS), is helping farmers protect their crops through the PlantwisePlus programme. In Vietnam, the programme supports smallholder farmers through plant clinics, digital tools, and advisory services, directly reaching over 51,500 farmers. Additionally, 2,946 enrolments in CABI Academy courses and PlantwisePlus digital tools have reached over 27,600 users.

In Bangladesh, agriculture forms the backbone of rural communities. It employs nearly two-thirds of the workforce, many of whom are women. However, the sector faces significant threats from plant health challenges, including devastating crop pests such as invasive fall armyworm. Moreover, the threats disproportionately affect smallholder farmers, especially women. At 58%, women make up an important – but often overlooked – percentage of the agricultural labour force.

Burundi has been busy stepping up its efforts to train more PlantwisePlus plant doctors to meet the country’s need to strengthen its food security and help more farmers grow more and lose less to crop pests and diseases. PlantwisePlus is a global programme that aims at providing farmers with better access to the advice and information needed to manage plant health problems and to improve their livelihoods. PlantwisePlus runs in over 40 countries, including Burundi.
