The Quincy Chamber of Commerce reports planning is underway for Safe Trick-or-Treat, the community’s longtime Halloween tradition. The event is set for Friday, Oct. 30, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in downtown and East Quincy. Organizations such as Quircus, the Quincy Volunteer Fire Department and the Plumas County Museum participate in past Safe Trick-or-Treat events.

The Almanor Recreation and Park District announces registration closes Aug. 15 for its youth soccer program, available to ages 4 through 14. The soccer season kicks off the first week of September and runs through the end of October. ARPD provides the jersey tops for the season. Each player will also receive a team photo with an individual photo. The U6 and U9 divisions will play Tuesdays and Thursdays. U10, U12 and U15 will compete on Saturdays, traveling to Quincy, Loyalton and Graeagle.

Plumas County Search and Rescue announces members participated in a joint training with Graeagle Fire Department and Care Flight at Nervino Airport in July. Care Flight is the primary air ambulance provider serving Plumas County and is a critical partner in the care and transport of patients throughout the region, said SAR.

The spirit of community is alive in Chester. One of the great testaments to that stands as a symbol on the east side of the rural town: the Olsen Barn. The Olsen Barn stands on the last remnant of what was once one of the largest ranches in Big Meadows. The Olsen family contributed significantly to the building of the community that would come to be known as Chester.

The Iron Horse Saloon in Westwood announces its 14th annual motorcycle Poker Run set for Aug. 15. Participants can sign in between 10:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., with the ride starting at 12:30. Dinner follows at 5 p.m. The event includes prize giveaways, payouts for highest and worst hands, and food and drink specials. Half of the proceeds from a 50/50 giveaway go to Westwood Preschool. The first 50 riders receive a run pin.

The Rural County Representatives of California reports that, in coordination with a broad coalition of consumer, local government, labor, agricultural and public interest organizations, it has filed comments with the Federal Communications Commission opposing a threat to universal telephone service protections.

The Plumas County Fire Safe Council reports more than 25 participants gathered for this spring’s Qualified Entity training held in partnership with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to expand defensible space and home hardening education. Participants included wildfire preparedness advocates, Firewise leaders, fire safe council representatives and community partners. The training was held over two days at the Quincy branch of the Plumas County Library.

Plumas County has more than its fair share of creative, talented women. From artists, makers and small business owners, to practitioners and performers, those women were out in force at the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds for the first annual Women of Plumas County Expo on Sunday, Aug. 9. The event featured around 50 different woman-owned and operated businesses and nonprofits, and showcased a wide variety of skillsets.

The Plumas County Public Health Agency invites the community to a free family movie night Friday, Aug. 14, at the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds in Quincy. “Surf’s Up” will play starting at 7:30 p.m. Organizers encourage everyone to “grab your blankets, lawn chairs and your favorite people for a fun evening under the night sky.” The family-friendly event is open to all and includes free popcorn. Children under 12 must be supervised. The fairgrounds are located at 204 Fairground Road in Quincy.
