I’m running to join the PMJA board because I believe in our industry and this organization. We are up against unprecedented challenges to the future of journalism, and I’m ready to help strategically, operationally and in the trenches alongside PMJA leaders, the board and the entire membership to ensure a strong and sustainable path forward. I’ve been in public media for nearly 15 years, and I’ve had the honor of observing it from a number of different, crucial perspectives.

Laura Lee, news director at Blue Ridge Public Radio, has been named PMJA’s 2025 Editor of the Year. The award recognizes an individual who exemplifies the very best in story editing and newsroom leadership. In nominating her, the BPR team praised her leadership through one of the deadliest disasters in Western North Carolina’s history. Hurricane Helene ripped through the mountains of Asheville and surrounding areas in September, leaving at least 103 people dead.

PMJA is pleased to announce that its first Public Media New Voices Award will go to Gerard Albert III, a reporter and Report For America corps member at Blue Ridge Public Radio in Asheville, North Carolina. The new award was established to celebrate rising stars who exemplify the values of public service journalism, excellence and innovative storytelling in addition to PMJA’s other annual honors, the Editor of the Year and Leo C. Lee Awards.
