Cal Poly Pomona’s eagerly awaited TomatozaniaTM featuring hundreds of tomato varieties for sale begins March 16, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Cal Poly Pomona Farm Store. Varieties range from the well-known Better Boy, Early Girl, Green Zebra and Cherokee Purple to the Abu Rawan, Blue Cream, Berries, Tie-Dye Pink, Hawaiian Pineapple, Brandywine, and many more. Tomatoes range from those perfect for large gardens to those that flourish in containers. There will even be micro tomato plants.

Cal Poly Pomona will host numerous events throughout Womxn’s Herstory Month in March to raise awareness and support women’s contributions and issues. In recognition of the multiplicity of gender expressions that exist and to be inclusive of the womxn-identifying population, the term “womxn” is used to mark this month. The term “herstory” reflects the importance of viewing the past from a feminist perspective with special attention to the experience of women.

The Office of Inclusive Excellence recently kicked off a new Kellogg Legacy Inclusive Excellence Speaker Series, starting with an inaugural event co-hosted with the Office of Student Success featuring Common Read author Heather McGhee. The speaker series will continue throughout the academic year to encourage discussion and reflection on equity, diversity, inclusion and other related subjects.

Cal Poly Pomona has been recognized as a 2023-24 U.S. Fulbright Scholar Top Producing Institution for STEM Fields and a Top Producing Institution of U.S. Fulbright Scholars among master’s-granting universities. In addition, the university has the special distinction of having the highest number of U.S. Scholars in this classification this academic year.

Author Heather McGhee enjoyed working as a public policy wonk, looking through data spreadsheets and trying to come up solutions to economic problems. She often appeared on television news shows and before Congress to advocate for those solutions. However, in 2017, she came to a realization. The way she was trying to solve the crisis of economic inequality wasn’t bearing fruit. “The inertia of inequality was getting worse,” McGhee said.

Conrad Newberry, a professor emeritus who taught in the College of Engineering for more than two decades, died peacefully Jan. 3 with his family by his side. He was 92. Newberry began teaching aeronautical engineering at Cal Poly Pomona in 1964 and retired in 1989. He served as a mentor to students and professors. Carl Rathmann, former associate dean and interim dean of the college, recalled fond memories of his friend and colleague.
