This week's announcement that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will be spending $20 million to purchase grape juice from area farmers is welcome news for the region. Just last week, U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer was trying to make juice out of sour grapes with his proposal to use the Section 32 funds provided by the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1933 to purchase grapes from local growers hurt by the cancellation of their purchase contracts with Refresco.

DUNKIRK — Another milestone has been reached in the Wells Enterprises project in Dunkirk. A ribbon cutting was held for the $425 million project, which includes the recently completed state-of-the-art employee center and new production lines.

Attorneys for the Southwestern Central School District say the district shouldn't be required to turn over pre-discovery materials in a potential lawsuit by a substitute teacher because there is no sign the district is at fault and because disclosing school security videos and building blueprints is a security risk.

Infinity Visual and Performing Arts will host Infini-Con, a free, family-friendly community event taking place from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Infinity Center in Jamestown. Activities will include a mini 'Artists Alley' featuring Infinity youth creators, a cosplay panel, costume runway, ribbon game, trinket trading, live chalk art and photo opportunities.

CASSADAGA -- According to the Office of the State Comptroller, the Village of Cassadaga's previous administration "did not provide adequate governance to safeguard IT assets from cybersecurity threats." The audit period spans from June 1, 2024 to Oct. 1, 2025. During that time, the Village utilized six external service providers to perform various IT services, including printer support, hardware maintenance and repair, security services and other IT support services.

While more than half of the 2025 Post-Journal/OBSERVER Boys Soccer All-Stars graduated leaving big holes in their teams, there are five athletes returning to their respective schools poised for another great season. Conversely, for the girls, with just five seniors leaving, there is plenty of elite talent returning for the season, which starts next week.

LAKEWOOD – The village will host a popular local event on Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., entitled the Lakewood Fall Festival 2026. Taryn Wilson, the director of the Lakewood Farmer's Market and who also pulls double-duty as the fall festival supervisor, spoke this week at the Village Board of Trustees meeting regarding the upcoming event. "We're all set for the upcoming fall festival," said Wilson.

LAKEWOOD -- The Lakewood Volunteer Fire Department (LWVFD) has raised more than $25,000 after selling one of its older apparatus. During the village’s monthly meeting, the fire chief of the Lakewood Fire Department told the Board of Trustees the sale of the department’s 2000 American-LaFrance Custom Pumper, previously designated as E-372, generated $25,000 in revenue for the department. “We sold it in-county,” said Fire Chief Kurt Hallberg.
