A 38-year-old Jamestown man is facing numerous charges after threatening to kill two individuals on Saturday afternoon. Angel A. Baez Huertas was charged with felony third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of second-degree menacing, second-degree criminal contempt and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Mayor Kim Ecklund has said the 2027 city budget wouldn't be pretty. The proposal released Thursday by Ecklund includes a 7.39% tax levy increase, increasing the tax levy by $1,302,414 to support a $47.3 million total budget. The proposed 2027 tax rate of $27.63 per $1,000 of assessed valuation is a 7.26% increase from 2026.

The Chautauqua Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will sponsor an Organ Plus Concert on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 3 p.m. at First Lutheran Church. The concert will feature music by American composers, plus students playing Bach selections, in honor of the nation's 250th anniversary celebration. The concert will include student organists including Greta Roushey, Julia Pound, Emmett Rohler and violinist Miller Spegar.

It is just after 9 a.m. on a Friday in Tari Geisler's third-grade classroom at Bush Elementary School. The morning's literacy lesson centers on "theme" -- the underlying message or lesson within a story. Students are challenged to read a passage explaining the concept and develop an understanding of what "theme" means. A teacher might naturally begin by reading the information aloud and explaining it to the class. Instead, Geisler places the learning in her students' hands.

There are few rights more fundamental to the American experiment than the right to vote. It is the quiet power placed in the hands of ordinary citizens, the power to choose their representatives, hold their government accountable and determine the course their communities and their country will take. However, those who do not use their rights cannot make their voices heard. The numbers before us should draw our attention. As of Feb. 20, 2026, Chautauqua County has 79,724 active registered voters.

Southwestern Middle School officials recently named its Students of the Month for September. They are: Constelleia Gould, sixth grade and the daughter of Carrie and Jesse Gould. Constelleia's favorite subjects in school are science, gym, and ELA. She plays basketball and is interested in playing flag football in the spring. She also belongs to the following clubs: crochet, quiz bowl, tabletop games, morning announcements, and esports. She hopes to join the ASL club, book club, and Spectrum club.

CBA Vision Rehabilitation Services will celebrate White Cane Awareness Day on Thursday, Oct. 15, with its annual White Cane Awareness Day Walk. The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. at Baker Park, located at the corners of W. Fourth and W. Fifth streets and Clinton Street in Jamestown. Observed internationally each year on Oct. 15, White Cane Awareness Day recognizes the importance of the white cane as a tool that promotes independence, confidence, and mobility for individuals who are visually impaired.

Megan Arnone Eckwahl has been named to succeed Rebecca Irwin Robbins, who is retiring after 20 years as the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities communications coordinator. Eckwahl leaves her role as manager of marketing and communications for the National Comedy Center and Lucy-Desi Museum, where she has worked since 2022.
