The federal government has announced more than $112 million in financing to support the construction of 217 new rental homes in Toronto as part of its efforts to increase housing supply. The project, located at 389 Cleveland Street in the city’s midtown area, will consist of a 15-storey residential building with a ground-floor retail space.
Opinions: Not so fast with that massive runway Mr. 43 Per Cent
During the last election, 43 per cent of Ontarians (who actually cast a ballot) voted for Doug Ford and the Ontario PC party, which apparently gives them a majority and allows them to run roughshod over local democracy and overrule Toronto City Council at every turn. That’s bad for us, bad for democracy and bad for our city.
Condo proposal near Summerhill has grown from 13 storeys to a towering high-rise
A proposed condo development near Summerhill and St. Clair has gone through a dramatic growth spurt since it was first submitted to the City just a few years ago. The site is located at 1233 Yonge St and 9 Woodlawn Ave E, at the southeast corner of Yonge and Woodlawn, and contains a low-rise rental building with 40 rental apartments, as well as a detached house-form building on Woodlawn that contains three commercial units.
Toronto’s Yonge-Eglinton intersection might get its own ‘pedestrian scramble’
Toronto’s bustling Yonge-Eglinton intersection might one day get a pedestrian scramble — a crosswalk where the traffic signal stops all vehicle traffic and allows pedestrians to cross in all directions, including north-south and east-west directions, as well as diagonally (similar to the ones at the busy Yonge-Bloor and Yonge Dundas intersections).
Toronto Bike lane protest campaign shows how to stand up to Queen’s Park and win
Bike lanes in Toronto will not be removed by the province any time soon. Bill 212, which authorized the removal of bike lanes on Bloor Street, Yonge Street and University Avenue, was approved in November 2024. Cycle Toronto filed a Charter challenge to the legislation, requiring the government to provide internal staff advice on the proposed Bill.
Toronto councillors are pushing to bring back a missing subway station in North York
Toronto’s Yonge North Subway Extension is already moving ahead, but a new City Council motion is trying to revive one stop that was left off the current plan: Cummer Station. The motion, titled It’s Time to Reinstate Cummer Station for the North York Centre, is being spearheaded by Councillor Lily Cheng and seconded by Councillor Jamaal Myers.
Jennifer Keesmaat proposes new timber affordable rental housing for Dufferin Grove
A new mid-rise housing development is being proposed by the Jennifer Keesmaat-led development company Collecdev Markee for the Dufferin Grove neighbourhood. If approved it would bring dozens of new rental homes built using mass timber construction, a method designed to reduce environmental impact while speeding up building timelines.
Thornhill rabbi urges stronger action after GTA synagogues hit with gunfire
A Thornhill rabbi is urging authorities to take stronger action against antisemitism after three GTA synagogues were struck by gunfire in the span of a week last month. Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto, known as BAYT, was struck by gunfire just after midnight in early March, near Clark Ave and York Hill Boulevard in Thornhill. According to the Vaughan Citizen, bullet holes and shattered glass were visible at the synagogue’s front door after the shooting.
Yorkville’s historic village core could be in line for heritage protection
Bloor-Yorkville may be known for its luxury storefronts and high-rise living, but the city has now formally moved to recognize some of the area’s older character, too. This week, City Council adopted a heritage planning item that identifies 88 properties in Bloor-Yorkville as having potential cultural heritage value or interest, meaning that parts of Yorkville could eventually see stronger heritage protection in the future.
A well-known Forest Hill Village retail complex has a new owner
Another notable piece of Forest Hill Village has changed hands. Toronto-based real estate firm Hullmark recently acquired the mixed-use retail complex at 446 Spadina Rd. In an Instagram post published just before Christmas, the company described the purchase as “another strategic addition” to its growing Toronto portfolio, reinforcing its commitment to “investing in high-quality urban properties in Toronto’s most established neighbourhoods”.
