Potrero View

The Potrero View is seeking an editor-in-chief for San Francisco’s longest-running neighborhood newspaper. This part-time contract position will lead coverage of San Francisco’s most economically and socially dynamic neighborhoods: Potrero Hill, Dogpatch, Mission Bay, and South-of-Market. Estimated hours per month: 40 Payment per month: $3,000 Start date: January 2027 Responsibilities Write and publish weekly digital newsletter rounding up neighborhood news from the neighborhoods.

Power Outage In 2010 the Trans Bay Cable was installed to transmit electricity from fossil fuel generating facilities located in the City of Pittsburg to San Francisco, in part to close Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s Potrero Power Plant, now site of The Power Station development. The undersea cable typically conveys upwards of 40 percent of the City’s electricity supply.

On August 17, at 7:50 a.m., Mission Bay Elementary School will welcome its inaugural two pre- (PreK) and transitional (TK) kindergarten classes, three kindergarten classes, and one TK/K Special Day Class (SDC). SDC accommodates students with moderate to severe physical, emotional, cognitive, or developmental disabilities. In each succeeding academic year, the 1415 Owens Street campus will add a consecutive grade, growing into a preschool through fifth grade school by 2032.

The Dogpatch Collective is an 18-member artist cooperative located in an 8,000-square-foot section of the top floor of a mixed-use building at 1661 Tennessee Street. For 10 years, members have met at least monthly for artist talks and informal chats. “I secured the lease and commissioned the building of these studios in a suite of the building in 2016. I started this collective because I wanted an affordable studio of the right size.

In August 1971, The Potrero View published “Artists and the Community,” which included Jean Halpert-Ryden, photographed by Bill Brinton seated in front of a large painting at an exhibit or in her 778 Kansas Street studio. She’d lived on the Hill for more than a decade, serving as a Potrero Hill Residents and Homeowners Council board member.

California College of the Arts will close at the end of this academic year. In anticipation of its shuttering, I was part of the first round of layoffs. As director of the Center for Art and Public Life, my role was to help nurture relationships between nonprofits and students. The Center offered mentoring, community, and civic love. I could have happily stayed there forever. Each year my team grew, touching more Bay Area residents. This momentum was abruptly severed by CCA’s impending demise.

It’s a message from the universe, people say, when something unexpected, fantastical, or insistent happens. Several individuals, who don’t know one another, make the same atypical observation to you over a handful of days. A hummingbird creates a nest right outside your window, lays her eggs, raises her young, and flies away, the entire cycle revealed as it unfolds. An old friend, who you haven’t thought of in years, pops into your head. Then calls moments later.

He legally changed it at the end of 2025 during the initial stages of his campaign for District 10 Supervisor. He added an umlaut to the “o,” a gesture reminiscent of the excesses of Mötley Crüe – themselves inspired by the Löwenbräu beer they were drinking when the discovered their name – or Spinal Tap’s furious parody.

Now through 8/29 Saturday Art: 65th Annual Potrero Hill Artists’ Exhibition Featuring artwork by library patrons who live, learn, work, or worship on Potrero Hill and Dogpatch.
