Richard Eugene Lineback, 84, of Rossford, Ohio, was born on March 22, 1942, in Toledo, Ohio, to C. Eugene and Mary Alice Lineback. Richard graduated from DeVilbiss High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army, spending part of his military service stationed in Germany. He carried a deep sense of patriotism throughout his life and was proud of his country.
Hargus Whitman - The Press
Hargus Whitman, better known as “Chuck” or “Gus” Whitman to his many friends, passed away, July 7, 2026, at the age of 91. Chuck was born March 17 to Charles and Dorothy Whitman in Rising Sun, Ohio and was a graduate of Woodward High School. Gus joined the Air Force in 1957 to 1961. When he returned home from the service he met his love, Glennda Clark, they were married and enjoyed a full life together.
OHSAA announces divisional assignments for fall, winter sports
Posted Monday, July 13, 2026 1:18 pm The Ohio High School Athletic Association has announced divisional assignments for football, girls volleyball, boys golf, girls golf, boys tennis, girls tennis, boys soccer, girls soccer, boys swimming and diving, girls swimming and diving, boys bowling, girls bowling, boys basketball and girls basketball. Wrestling divisions will be announced in the fall.
This week in Toledo history - July 12-18
July 12 1844: George Thompson is hanged in Fremont for the murder of 18-year-old Catherine Hamler, who had refused his marriage proposal. 1893: A fire destroys several blocks of homes and businesses in the Wood County town of Luckey. 1904: Samuel “Golden Rule” Jones, the popular reform mayor, dies of heart failure in Toledo. Businesses close, and the city is in deep mourning. His body lies in state at Memorial Hall as thousands line up to file past their beloved mayor.
Gerrie pleads not guilty to felony child endangerment
Kristen Gerrie, who is accused of a third-degree felony child endangerment charge stemming from a fatal boating incident on Lake Erie, pleaded not guilty in Oregon Municipal Court on July 7. The charge was upgraded from an original misdemeanor count. The 41-year-old was originally slated to appear in court on July 6, but posted a $50,000 surety bond, and the case was moved to the following day.
Staff and residents at Sunshine create bonds
For a little over five years, Amy Bateman has been a resident at the Sunshine Communities home in Walbridge, where she has been able to create bonds with her peers and enjoy herself. Sunshine Communities is a nonprofit in northwest Ohio that supports and empowers those with developmental disabilities.
New Life Squad 14 EMS Station opens in Gibsonburg
The Sandusky County Commissioners and Sandusky County EMS jointly hosted a ribbon cutting and open house for the new Life Squad 14 Station in Gibsonburg on July 6. The new station is located at 883 S. Main St. “The new station represents a major investment in emergency medical services for Sandusky County, providing EMS crews with a modern facility designed to better serve residents and support first responders for years to come,” the Sandusky County Chamber of Commerce said in a statement.
Genoa, Oak Harbor compete at AAU Scholastic Duals
The Genoa boys wrestling program earned a fifth-place finish as the AAU Scholastic Duals, which took place in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. from June 26-29. Facing some of the nation's top wrestling programs, the Comets compiled a 4-6-1 record in team dual competition, and they finished the tournament on a high note by defeating county rival Oak Harbor, 41-32, in its final dual to claim fifth place in the Gold Pool.
Fifth annual Heroes and Hot Rods set for Aug. 2 in Oregon
The fifth-annual Heroes and Hot Rods, a community day to recognize the area’s first responders, is set to take place at the Oregon Recreation Center on Sunday, Aug. 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event originally began as a way to honor Oregon’s first responders. This year, however, it has expanded to other local first responders such as the village of Walbridge and potentially more as the event gets closer to happening.
Woodmore student earns spot on Ohio National HS rodeo team
Cassidy Camper, a junior at Woodmore High School, has earned a position on the Ohio National High School rodeo team and will be traveling to Lincoln, Neb. from July 19-25 to compete at the 78th annual National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) in the Breakaway, Team Roping and Goat Tying competitions. Featuring more than 1,800 contestants from 44 states, five Canadian provinces, Australia, New Zealand and Guatemala, the NHSFR is the world’s largest rodeo.
