On Sunday July 12th, our Patron Louis Theroux will appear on BBC Radio 4 to talk about our work and the power of National Prison Radio. During the appeal, Louis introduces you to Ali. For the first few weeks of Ali’s prison sentence, he felt uncertain about what his future might hold. Then he discovered National Prison Radio on his TV. Hearing others speak honestly about their experiences gave him something to hold on to.

He began writing letters to the station, and before long joined the production team, learning how to record and make programmes for other prisoners.

From HMP Styal to BBC 5Live – the very talented B was invited in for a day shadowing the 5Live team at MediaCityUK in Salford. During her sentence at HMP Styal, B joined our National Prison Radio team and worked with us for nearly six months. She produced a range of shows, and even subbed in for Ali to present Porridge – one of our most listened to programmes on the entire schedule.

Everyone’s talking about our patron Louis Theroux and the manosphere. For us at the Prison Radio Association, the issues he explores are part of daily life behind bars. 96% of people in prison across England and Wales are men. In a largely male environment, cut off from the outside, extreme ideas about being a ‘real man’ like those Louis explores in his documentary can take hold. Ideas about always being tough, putting other men down, or seeing women as less important can become the norm.

BBC Radio 5 Live visited our National Prison Radio studio at HMP Styal to train our prisoner-producers in how to deliver live commentary on major events, sharing insights and techniques from their own live broadcasting experience at 5 Live. Radio 5 Live is BBC Radio’s home of breaking news and live sports coverage, bringing it’s audience major news stories and sports events as they happen.
