Here’s something I keep noticing about myself: I want my heroes pre-softened. I want Martin Luther King Jr. the way he shows up on the coffee mug — quotable, dignified, safely dead, available for inspiration without cost. And I have caught myself wanting James Cone the same way. A few good lines about God being on the side of the oppressed. The fire left out. Every time I reach for that version of Cone, his own words slap my hand away.
