This is the fourth live Q&A for The Christ Empire Couldn’t Keep, and this week we’re in the Americas with Bartolomé de las Casas — Joerg’s pick over Martin Luther for the Reformation-era chapter, and the hinge of the whole course. Here’s why. Las Casas owned an encomienda. He had Native people working for him. He was, in Joerg’s words, a slave driver. Then he woke up, gave the land away, freed the people, and spent the rest of his life arguing against the conquest.

Barry Harvey is back with a book that manages to put madness, theocracy, and anarchism in the title — three despised words, deliberately chosen. It’s a collection of essays developed over his career, and beneath them all sits one assertion: the church is not a subsystem of civil society. It has its own integrity, its own allegiance, and its own context for rethinking how it relates to everything else.

An account called Reasoned Reality posting “seven core Christian doctrines invented after Christ died, and the church wrote down the exact dates” — Trinity 325, original sin with Augustine, Anselm in 1098, inerrancy in a Chicago hotel in 1978, the rapture with Darby in the 1830s. I didn’t text him back that night because I was writing notes. Here’s the thing: the premise is right and the execution is a slander. Doctrines do develop.
