Proeflokaal Reijngoud Proeflokaal Reijngoud is a laid-back Rotterdam café located at the corner of the Witte de With and de Schiedamse Vest. They opened in 2012 and have been a hit with locals ever since. Besides the giant outdoor terrace, the inside is quite cozy and chill. They serve 24 beers on tap and more than 200 out of the bottle – more than enough choice for any beer lover.

As long as there have been places renowned for their beer, there have been mildly intoxicated travellers willing to venture halfway around the world to seek them out. Belgium for their Trappists. Bavaria for their traditions and festivals. And more recently, Asheville for their…hipsters?

Cheers to Prostly’s thirteenth issue where we delve into the world of beer and travel. The overarching theme this month is the force that is craft beer and its influence around the world. We’re highlighting pioneering microbreweries from South Africa, Vietnam and Western Europe. We’ve got two comprehensive beer guides in this issue. First, a look at one of Europe’s most groundbreaking beer scenes, Copenhagen, which extends far beyond Mikkeller.

Mexico City Craft Beer Bars: El Deposito This large bar and bottle shop in Roma is a must for any craft beer enthusiast in Mexico City, though there are other locations across town if you can’t make it here. El Deposito has a dozen or so Mexican craft beers on draft, perfect for enjoying at the large central bar watching a local game on the TV or at one of the outdoor tables on a hot day.

We’re offered a sampler, which consisting of Clarens Brewery’s year-round brews as well as a few seasonals. The brewery has the basic styles down, like their sessionable Clarens 1912 American Pale Ale and crisp flagship Blond, as well as delicious pure ciders made with fruit from local farmers. The unrelenting heat makes us gravitate toward the Weiss and cherry cider, both of which are refreshing and tasty.

Situated on the Oaxacan Coast, the small town has escaped the mass tourism and resort culture prominent in many of Mexico’s other oceanfront spots.

Hola Chicos! We’re showcasing and celebrating the beers of Mexico in our latest issue of Prostly. Craft beer has become a phenomenon in this large and diverse country, like with much of the world. But Mexico is a bit of a unique case. Major global beer conglomerates like Grupo Modelo who owns Corona, Victoria, and Modelo (and is itself owned by AB InBev) control the network and resources, making it difficult for independent brewers to access the market and brew cost effectively.

What I didn’t quite expect was to get lost in great beer and conversation less than a kilometre from my home in the suburbs of the city’s District 7.

Copenhagen Beer Guide: What the Locals Drink Nørrebro Bryghus / Braw One of the craft beer pioneers in Copenhagen, Nørrebro opened in 2003 and was part of kickstarting the Danish craft beer revolution. It’s an American inspired brewpub offering great beers in a spacious setting. In 2006, they expanded with a production brewery outside Copenhagen enabling a wide distribution of both bottles and kegs.

It’s a cliché as old as humankind but like most cliches, there’s definitely something to the story. Living in Brussels, I still wonder how the night shops manage to build their shop window out of – almost exclusively – beer bottles.
