The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State or PSU) is a public state-related land-grant research university with campuses and facilities throughout Pennsylvania. Founded in 1855 as the Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania, Penn State became the state's only land-grant university in 1863. Its instructional mission includes undergraduate, graduate, professional and continuing education offered through resident instruction and online delivery. The University Park campus has been labeled one of the "Public Ivies", a publicly funded university considered as providing a quality of education comparable to those of the Ivy League. Penn State is one of the leading research universities in the United States, ranking 22nd in total research expenditures (at $1.034 billion) and boasting 12 top-ten rankings, trailing only Johns Hopkins University, the University of Michigan and MIT. Penn State is consistently a top producer of Fulbright Scholars and has also produced numerous Rhodes Scholars, Guggenheim Fellows and MacArthur Fellows.
