Público, Social Communication S. A., which publishes the PUBLIC newspaper, belongs to the Portuguese business group Sonae and was founded in 1989. Its first director was Vicente Jorge Silva.
The first issue of Público went to newsstands on March 5, 1990, with an Editorial Statute. This is still in force.
Público, Comunicação Social S. A. was incorporated on 31 October 1989, four months before the newspaper went to newsstands.
The PUBLIC newspaper joined the World Media Network in 1991, which consists of an association of several leading newspapers around the world including, for example, the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, the Spanish El País, the French Libération and the Italian La Stampa. , with which he published several special supplements.
For some time, it had shares in its capital stock of foreign media companies, namely the holders of the daily El País and La Repubblica (Italy). Today, Público is part of Sonae's sub-holding for communication, Sonaecom.
On May 11, 1995, Público registered its website and on September 22 of that year, PÚBLICO Online (now known as Público.pt) was created, as well as another company, Público.pt Digital Multimedia Services , SA.
