The Quadram Institute

One of the first UK tonsil biorepositories has been established to help improve scientific understanding and treatment for a range of oral health conditions. Scientists and clinicians at Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB) and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) have joined forces to set up the oral biorepository, which will store tissue following tonsillectomy procedures.

Two innovative young food companies, BeanTastic Hummus and SUCSEED, are shortlisted along with the Quadram Institute, in the Academic to Business Collaboration of the Year in the Tastebuds Collective Collaboration awards. Researchers from the Quadram Institute, working through our consultancy service, QIB Extra, have supported BeanTastic Hummus and SUCSEED with science-backed insights as part of the companies’ respective product developments.

The National Research Organisations (NRO) Group officially launches today (Thursday 9 July) at the Academy of Medical Sciences, London. A first of its kind collective for the UK, the NRO brings together more than 100 leaders from government, research, academia, industry and funding organisations, marking a new chapter for the UK’s research landscape.

NUTRIMIND consortium partners at the project kick-off meeting in Wageningen, the Netherlands, 2–4 June 2026 The Quadram Institute is part of a new Horizon Europe-funded research project exploring how nutrition, dietary choices, the gut microbiome, and lifestyle factors might interact with mental health NUTRIMIND (“Understanding Mental Health and Nutrition in Europe”) will examine these relationships from childhood through older adulthood.

This first-of-it-kind enteric fever surveillance study combined multi-team collaborations. A collaborative study combining expertise from the Quadram Institute, UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and Public Health Wales sheds light on enteric fever cases between 2004-2023, revealing that cases have risen post-pandemic. 2.7% of cases constitute carriage, the phenomenon where healthy individuals carry and spread the disease unknowingly, increasing the enteric fever burden in England and Wales.

It lurked in hospital corridors for decades, largely unnoticed by the wider public. But now an international team led by the University of East Anglia (UEA) and including scientists at the Quadram Institute and in Canada and Mexico have uncovered how one of the world’s most feared “superbugs” rose to global dominance.

The Communications and External relations team of Andrew Stronach, Ruby O’Grady, Andrew Chapple & Clemence Blanchard) were recognised in the In-House PR Team of the Year (Not-for-Profit/Public/Charity Sector). The Mark of Excellence was awarded by the CIPR’s panel of judges in recognition of the outstanding work the team has delivered in developing the reputation and recognition of the Quadram Institute over the last five years.

Quadram Institute Bioscience today welcomes the announcement that a consortium led by the European ME Research Group (EMERG) has secured funding from the EU Horizon programme to support a major pan-European research project focused on myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME, sometimes referred to as ME/CFS). This award represents a significant advance in coordinated international biomedical research into ME following more than a decade of collaborative infrastructure development across Europe.

Scientists from the Quadram Institute have travelled to Washington DC to discuss how research into the ways bacteria interact with metals could help develop cleaner and more sustainable methods of recovering the critical minerals needed for future technologies. Prof. Martin Warren, Group Leader at the Quadram Institute, attended a UK-US symposium on 5 June alongside Prof. Nick Le-Brun and Prof. Tom Clarke from the University of East Anglia.
