Search ArticlesHow Northern Ireland’s parties navigated Europe before and after Brexit
By Dr Conor J. Kelly, Bingham Early Career Fellow in Constitutional Studies at Balliol College, University of Oxford. A majority of voters in Northern Ireland voted to remain in the EU in the 2016 referendum, with 56% voting Remain and 44% voting Leave. Yet political parties in Northern Ireland have, over several decades, displayed inconsistent or at times unusual positions on European integration.
New Policy Paper – Home, Heritage and Community Languages
By Dr Daniel McAuley, Hannah Murphy, Dr Emma Humphries and Prof Janice Carruthers from the School of Arts, English and Languages at Queen’s University Belfast. Home, Heritage and Community Languages (HHCLs) are languages which are usually used and learned at home, within the community, in complementary schools or in faith settings (e.g. Arabic, Chinese, Polish, Urdu). They are not normally acquired in mainstream educational settings.
New Policy Papers – Lessons from the Covid-19 Pandemic – Religions and Public Policy
By Prof Gladys Ganiel and Dr Caoimhe Ní Dhónaill. The COVID-19 pandemic was one of the most significant social, political, and public health crises experienced on the island of Ireland in recent history. While much attention has been devoted to the responses of governments, healthcare systems, and scientific experts, less consideration has been given to the role played by religious leaders, institutions, and communities. Yet religions remained important social actors throughout the pandemic.
Boys want to challenge harmful ideas about manhood – working with them, not lecturing them, is the key
By Professor Maria Lohan. In a recent BBC documentary, former England men’s football manager Gareth Southgate explored the challenges facing young men in Britain, including low school attainment, declining employment opportunities, low self-esteem and poor mental health. The positive masculinity Southgate promotes focuses on ambition to achieve, emotional openness, resilience and learning from setbacks, advocating for the role of positive male role models.

Home, Heritage and Community Languages (HHCLs) are languages which are usually used and learned at home, within the community or in faith settings (e.g. Arabic, Polish, Urdu) and not through instruction in mainstream educational settings. University admissions practices with regard to A Level qualifications are varied and inconsistent.
Minimum Age of Criminal Responsibility – Three Wee Lads
By Rev Chris Bennet I’m part of the team at Greenisland Parish Church, a friendly wee congregation on the outskirts of Belfast. I admit – our church building isn’t looking its best these days; the gaping holes in the roof, and the pile of rubble where a parish hall used to be, aren’t doing it any favours. We’re now a year and a half from our dark night of the soul, when the whole place went up in flames when we’d just had an amazing weekend celebrating the church’s 70th birthday.

A century of change in Northern Ireland, 1926-2026
To mark the centenary of the holding of the first Census of Population for Northern Ireland on 18-19 April 1926, the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) has compiled a statistical bulletin comparing the demographic statistics of that census with the most recent 2021 census. In the following essay Professor Marie Coleman (HAPP) looks at the historical context of the 1926 census and the factors which have influenced change in Northern Ireland over the past century.
The lost Northern Ireland census of 1926
On 18 April this year the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) and the Irish Central Statistics Office (CSO) will release the household returns of the 1926 Irish Free State census, the first census of population held after independence. These will be made freely available to researchers on the NAI’s dedicated census website, which currently hosts the previously digitised returns of the all-Ireland censuses of 1901 and 1911.
Churchill And Ireland: A Varied Legacy Revisited At Queen’s
The St. Patrick’s Day festivities at the White House can usually be relied upon for political soundbites and this year was no exception. Behind the rhetoric over conflict in Iran and the US’ fragile alliances, it was the brief exchange between President Trump and Taoiseach Micheál Martin over Sir Winston Churchill’s legacy which was particularly interesting.
