TROY — Kayden Saunders ran for 184 yards and teammate Christian McNair scored on a pair of rushing touchdowns as visiting Randleman captured a 35-28 victory at Montgomery Central in Friday night’s Piedmont Athletic Conference football game. Randleman (3-4 overall, 2-0 PAC), which has won two in a row and three of its last four games, scored the only 14 points of the fourth quarter. Landon Whitaker scored on a punt return for the Tigers. Saunders had a touchdown among his 23 carries.
Prep soccer: Southwestern Randolph Cougars glide through early conference games

Campbell women win Tot Hill Invitational
ASHEBORO — Campbell was the team champion in the third annual Tot Hill Invitational for women’s golf last week at Tot Hill Farm Golf Club. The Camels shot a three-round total of 860 to win among 12 teams. College of Charleston, who’s the tournament host, was the runner-up at 5-over 869 and UNC Wilmington placed third at 884. Charlotte was sixth at 901, while in-state schools Western Carolina (16), Elon (920) and UNC Asheville (942) were Nos. 9-11.
Prep volleyball: Southwestern Randolph nabs conference title, others close in on crowns
Southwestern Randolph’s volleyball team racked up two sweeps in the Four Rivers Conference to clinch the conference regular-season championship last week. Other area teams could capture regular-season championships this week as well as that portion of the season winds down. Teams are gearing up for conference tournaments next week. Cheyenne Dixon had 10 kills and Mary Kathryn Coltrane provided 17 assists in Southwestern Randolph’s 27-25, 25-17, 25-17 road decision against Eastern Randolph.
United Way set for cereal fundraiser in Asheboro
ASHEBORO — An annual fund raiser for the United Way of Randolph County is coming later this week. The cereal sale will be held Saturday (Oct. 10) at Bicentennial Park in Asheboro. Each bag or box sells for $1, with anywhere from 12,000 to 15,000 items expected to be available. “This is kind of our kick-off for the year,” said Jamie Hill, operations and communications coordinator for United Way of Randolph County.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Mary Kathryn Coltrane
Southwestern Randolph volleyball The Cougars are putting together another strong season and Coltrane has been helping the cause. As a senior setter, she helps set up the offensive attack. She’s averaging more than 6½ assists per set and she’s the overall team leader in assists. Coltrane also leads the Cougars in service points. Southwestern Randolph could wrap up at least a share of the Four Rivers Conference regular-season championship the end of this week.
RCSS sets commencement dates for 2027

Per usual, the first of those ceremonies is for Randolph County Early College, with that scheduled for 10 a.m. May 21 at Journey Church in Asheboro.
Man charged in Caraway Speedway shootings
Derek Marshall (Randolph County Sheriff’s Office) SOPHIA — A 22-year-old Greensboro man is in custody after two people were shot Saturday night at Caraway Speedway. The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office charged Derek Marshall with two counts of felony assault with the intent to kill, inflicting serious injury. Two people with gunshot wounds were transported to local hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Asheboro’s Pugh places high in senior golf event
Tord Sollie | CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 MEBANE — Gary Pugh of Asheboro tied for seventh place in the 65-and-older division of the North Carolina Super Senior championship last week at Mill Creek Golf Club. Pugh shot rounds of 72 and 76 for 4-over-par 148 in wet conditions. Paul Simson of Raleigh posted 141 (69, 72), needing a one-hole playoff with Macon Moye of Southern Pines to secure the title among 42 entrants, with 34 golfers finishing.
Prep football: Randleman captures league opener; Southwestern Randolph, Eastern Randolph also win
RANDLEMAN — Kayden Saunders ran for two touchdowns in Randleman’s 29-16 victory against visiting Lexington as the Tigers had a solid showing in their Piedmont Athletic Conference opener Friday night. Saunders rushed for 149 yards on 23 carries. Christian McNair and quarterback Reid Herring also each had a touchdown run. Randleman (2-4 overall) has won two of its last three games. Lexington is 1-4.
