We love hearing from members of the community and sharing the stories of amazing young people, volunteers, and educators who are using their passion for technology to create positive change in the world around them. Last year, we shared the story of Douglas, founder and director of Oasis Mathare, an organisation using technology to open doors for young people in one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements.

We’re pleased to share that we are expanding our Experience AI programme to Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand to train 5000 educators who can reach 150,000 students by 2028, thanks to generous funding of $1.2 million from Google.org. Working with local education organisations, we will support young people to develop a foundational understanding of AI technologies, their social and ethical implications, and the role that AI can play in their lives.

On 10–15 May, we welcomed the global Bebras community to Cambridge, UK for the 22nd Bebras International Task Workshop. As organisers of the UK Bebras Challenge, we hosted this year’s annual Task Workshop, bringing together Bebras organisers, educators, and researchers from around the world to review and refine the computational thinking tasks in preparation for countries’ 2026 Bebras Challenges.

4 years ago I decided to start a new CoderDojo in my community. The logic was simple: to provide the best support I could to the CoderDojo community, I wanted to understand what it was really like to be a CoderDojo Champion. And so, with the help of local volunteers, Selby CoderDojo was born.

Coolest Projects UK returned to Bradford in May, with more than 200 young people showcasing digital projects they had designed and built themselves. Visitors at the showcase event had the chance to explore an amazing range of projects across categories, from Scratch and Python to AI, hardware, web design, and game development.

Millions of young people and educators around the world use our technology to teach, learn, and create with code. Building it safely and responsibly is intrinsic to who we are and what we stand for. A young person presents code she has written in our Code Editor. A growing body of research and public commentary links the use of social media, smartphones, and algorithmic platforms to declining mental health and attention in young people.

The development of AI and data science has transformed how we gain insights from data. In healthcare, AI tools are being used in the development of new treatments as researchers apply machine learning methods to datasets. However, applying AI in healthcare also brings risks, particularly when systems amplify existing biases in data or design.

Today’s data-driven tools can make many aspects of our personal lives less time-consuming, because they present us with options and even make decisions for us. By relying on predictive text features, we write messages more quickly and outsource our word choices. By using music and film recommendations, we outsource our personal taste. And by using AI chatbots that produce confident answers to every single one of our questions, we outsource our thinking.

We work with partners globally to promote AI literacy through Experience AI, our programme created in collaboration with Google DeepMind. With resources available in 19+ languages and a network of partners in over 38 countries, a key part of our work is translating and localising our materials so as many young people around the world as possible build the confidence to engage with AI critically and responsibly.

There’s something really special about a Code Club. It’s a unique space for young people to get creative with technology on their terms, explore what interests them, and learn through experimenting and having fun. But speak to any Code Club leader and they’ll tell you: Code Club delivers so much more than just coding skills. In the thousands of free Code Clubs across the world, you’ll see young people not only make amazing tech creations, but also grow as people.
