The Tampa Bay Rays finally did it. They actually bought in a very big way at the trade deadline by acquiring right-handed starter Freddy Peralta from the New York Mets. This is an uncharacteristic move for a team that is typically cautious and likes to guard its prospects, but it shows that Tampa Bay is serious about trying to fend off the New York Yankees in the American League East. This move immediately bolsters the team’s rotation.

While the Tampa Bay Rays were in the running to make a bombshell acquisition as one of the favorites to land Tarik Skubal, they ultimately decided not to make a serious play for the pricey rental. Landing Skubal might have required parting with super prospect Theo Gillen, and that was just a bridge too far. But fret not! Tampa isn't sitting around and instead swung a deal with the New York Mets for Freddy Peralta. Peralta is a buy-low rental with some serious upside.

We're not used to hearing the Tampa Bay Rays being on the acquiring side of a blockbuster deal, but according to recent reports, they nearly landed one of the league's biggest fish back at the 2023 trade deadline. That's right, the Rays were sniffing around Shohei Ohtani. The proposed deal would have included Junior Caminero, Carson Williams, plus some lesser talent, per Ken Rosenthal.

There are a lot of positives about the Tampa Bay Rays being in the state of Florida. Warm weather, lots of amenities for fans to enjoy when they are not at the park, and some really good food and breweries if you look around enough. Unfortunately, one of the downsides of Florida, the rain, seems to have followed the Rays up to Cleveland for their matchup against the Guardians.

This journeyman has now been a member of 10 different organizations throughout his 13-year career. It's generally not a good sign if a player has played for this many teams in a short period of time and that's definitely the case for this athlete. His clubhouse morals have been criticized over and over again, but teams still continue to give him an opportunity. Why? Well, he gets on base! His career OBP likely has something to do with it, but the 9-19 Mets had a short leash for the former Ray.

The Rays' front office has some important decisions to make this offseason as five key players will be relying on club options to stay with their current team. Yandy Diaz, Drew Rasmussen, Nick Martinez, Cedric Mullins, and Taylor Walls are all depending on the front office to stay with the Rays' organization for the 2027 campaign. These five athletes have a combined 2.6 WAR so far this season led by Yandy Diaz and Nick Martinez tied at a productive 1.1 WAR.

The Rays have had an incredible start to the 2026 season as they have a 16-11 record which is currently second best in the American League and seventh best in the majors. However, it's been an odd season in Tampa Bay as they have yet to execute this rather mundane feat that is normally performed more frequently throughout their franchise's history.

If it wasn't for the NL Central, the Rays would be the best team in the MLB... by far. Despite going a miserable 5-10 against teams from that talented division, Tampa Bay still holds the second-best record in the American League as they've absolutely dominated against their own league. In 11 games against AL teams, the Rays are 10-1 and haven't lost one such game since April 3rd.

The Rays' bullpen has undoubtedly been the worst component of their 2026 season. Entering today, only two teams in the majors, the Royals and the Astros, have a worse bullpen ERA. Now, granted the starting pitching are currently in the middle of the pack to balance out the Rays' good fortunes, but if they want to make a deep run this season, the relievers will need to step up their game. A 5.64 ERA is not going to cut it.
