UNDP and Visa launch digital finance pilot for 50 young producers
A new partnership between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sri Lanka and Visa is taking digital financial inclusion into Sri Lanka’s estate communities. The seven-month pilot will begin at Hope Estate in Hewaheta, Nuwara Eliya, supporting 50 young agricultural producers. Most of the participants are women. The partnership was formalized by Azusa Kubota, Resident Representative of UNDP in Sri Lanka, and Avanthi Colombage, Visa’s Country Manager for Sri Lanka and Maldives.
Digital motor insurance valid in Sri Lanka, Police remind drivers
Sri Lanka Police recently issued a statement clarifying the validity of digital motor insurance cards. The notice comes amid efforts to transition motor insurance coverage to digital. During a media briefing on 3 September, Deputy Inspector General of Police W. P. J. Senadheera said officers should verify whether a vehicle has active insurance coverage using the driver’s phone or the officer’s own phone.
Sri Lanka is getting 1000 more 4G towers
The government is planning to build 1,000 new 4G towers over the next three years, according to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The move comes as the administration looks to expand internet connectivity across the country. Speaking at a public meeting in Bulathsinhala, the president revealed that the government is building new 4G towers as part of its broader digital Sri Lanka plans. The first phase of this project will see 250 of the 1,000 towers built by 2027.
Sri Lanka’s Government Super App may be months away
The Sri Lankan government has a super app on the way with the aim of streamlining its services to the public. First announced back in last September, the app is also meant to integrate with another upcoming project, the Sri Lanka Unique Digital ID (SLUDI). Sri Lanka has a messy track record when it comes to digital government services. Often, users go through multiple logins, navigate different sites, and even submit duplicate forms just to access a specific service.

RedemptAI is bringing in technology veteran Tony Weeresinghe as CEO and co-founder, while Jeevan Gnanam moves into the role of co-founder and managing director. The company is building an enterprise AI workforce platform to enable businesses to use artificial intelligence alongside their human teams. RedemptAI wants to help companies use digital workers to complete practical business tasks using company data, software tools and predefined rules.
Kapruka seeks approval to redirect LKR 50 million after cargo marketplace deemed unviable
Kapruka Holdings PLC is seeking shareholder approval to reallocate LKR 50 million in unutilized IPO proceeds after concluding that its planned personal cargo collection and delivery marketplace is not commercially viable. In a 31 August disclosure to the Colombo Stock Exchange, Kapruka stated it reviewed market conditions, customer demand, competition, regulatory requirements, operating requirements and expected financial returns.
