The University Record is the official source for faculty-staff news at the University of Michigan. The University Record, in print and online, is part of the U-M Office of the Vice President for Communications.
News is posted to the website daily and a print edition is distributed weekly (Monday) during the academic year and biweekly during the summer. There is a companion University Record email newsletter that is distributed daily during the academic year and weekly during the summer.
The University Record accepts articles of interest to U-M faculty, staff and retirees from units across the Ann Arbor campus, the Health System and from the Flint and Dearborn regional campuses.
The University Record is distributed free from newsstands on all campuses. It is mailed to university retirees. Mail subscriptions also are available at a nominal cost. Source

UM-Flint has made recycling simpler across campus with a new single-stream system and standardized waste stations designed to make it easier for students, faculty and staff to know where materials belong. Since July, recyclable paper, plastic, aluminum and cardboard have gone into the same recycling bins, eliminating the need to sort materials into separate containers.
U-M research funding program application deadline extended
University of Michigan researchers will now have until Dec. 30 to seek funding through a program aimed at supporting faculty whose federal grant proposals received strong peer-review evaluations but were not funded or remain pending. The research funding program launched in January to provide short-term support for principal investigators across all three campuses due to the shifting federal funding landscape.
Campuswide campaign promotes importance of research safety
Safety in all academic and research endeavors is a core institutional value at the University of Michigan. To reinforce this important commitment to excellence in safety, the Research and Academic Safety Committee has relaunched a campuswide campaign to highlight the importance of wearing appropriate personal protective equipment in research and academic spaces.
Lab reuse program expands with new NCRC Swap Shop
University of Michigan researchers will have another way to find needed laboratory supplies while keeping usable materials out of the waste stream when a new Lab Swap Shop opens Sept. 29 at the North Campus Research Complex. The new shop, located in NCRC Building 20, Room 5N, expands a Lab Reuse Program that earlier this year surpassed $1 million in avoided purchasing costs for U-M researchers. The expansion also will make in-person reuse more accessible to researchers on North Campus.
A passion for history comes to life at Michigan’s Renaissance Festival
The first time Grant Clement attended the Michigan Renaissance Festival, he arrived without a costume. As a teenager with a passion for medieval history, Clement had become interested in attending the festival when his mother gave him some wooden weaponry she’d gotten there. His father agreed to accompany him. What Clement didn’t anticipate was how large the event in Holly, Michigan, would be — and how many people would actively — and enthusiastically — participate.
It Happened at Michigan: Remembering Sept. 11
Twenty-five years ago, Sept. 11 fell on a Tuesday early in the fall semester at the University of Michigan. Students were settling into campus, and classes were just getting underway. The Michigan football team was preparing to play Western Michigan that Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Big House. Shortly before 9 a.m., word began spreading across campus that a plane had struck the World Trade Center in New York City.

How to enroll in FSAs during Open Enrollment
Enrolling in a Flexible Spending Account is a way to save money in 2027. Individuals enrolled in Flexible Spending Accounts pay for out-of-pocket healthcare and dependent care expenses with pre-tax dollars. FSA contributions are deducted from paychecks before taxes are calculated, resulting in tax savings. Eligible faculty and staff can enroll in 2027 Flexible Spending Accounts during U-M’s annual Open Enrollment event from Oct. 12-23.
U-M seeks community feedback on draft AI guiding principles
The University of Michigan has released a new report examining the role of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning, along with draft university-wide guiding principles regarding AI. Members of the U-M community are invited to provide feedback on the draft principles during a two-week comment period.
New students encouraged to connect with those unlike themselves
The University of Michigan formally welcomed nearly 8,000 first-year and transfer students Aug. 30 at the annual New Student Convocation in Crisler Center.
