Search ArticlesNelson achieves best possible outcomes as Red Wing’s No. 2 diver
For the past four years, Red Wing could claim to have the best 1-2 diving combination in the region. By Landen Nelson’s junior and senior seasons, he and Zach Mikkelson were considered the best diving duos in the state. Most of the attention went to Mikkelson as he broke records on what seemed like a weekly basis. Mikkelson placed higher than Nelson at state meets and was running away with the section title year after year. Many in the area knew how good he was on the boards.

Three people died and three others were rescued after their pontoon collided with another vessel and capsized late Saturday on Lake Pepin, authorities said. The search transitioned to a recovery effort on Sunday before the bodies of the three missing boaters were found.
Phoenix Theater presents summer musical, “Bright Star”
Opening at the Sheldon Theatre on July 17, Phoenix Theatre’s summer musical, Bright Star, delivers a sweeping tale of love and redemption. Inspired by a true story and set in the American South in the 1920s and 40s, this Broadway production features a Tony-nominated score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. According to Director Julie Martin, Bright Star is a deeply human narrative that touches the heart. “It has fresh surprises that make us laugh and cry.
‘Agitators’ are wandering ‘our streets with lofty, nonsensical platitudes’
To the editor, Alas, a dreadful malady hath crept across the fair bounds of Red Wing. The self-styled "progressives" of our day, drunk on the heady wine of municipal meddling, bring unto our tranquil village nought but ruin disguised as reform. These modern-day agitators wander our streets with lofty, nonsensical platitudes. They propose to cure the common inconveniences of mortal life by casting the hard-earned coin of the yeoman into bottomless wells of bureaucracy.

Downtown Main Street launches new app
Over the past year, 12 new businesses have opened in downtown Red Wing, and two more are slated to open soon. Add to that the increased Amtrak traffic from the Borealis train route, and Red Wing has seen an increase in out-of-town visitors in recent months. Likewise, the new businesses mean that locals aren’t necessarily up to date on all that Red Wing has to offer for them now. So Red Wing Downtown Main Street has launched a new mobile website to help everyone navigate the town.
Red Wing Aces extend winning streak to seven games
Red Wing turned in a great performance on Saturday, July 4 in front of a big crowd at "The Ath" to blank rival and annual holiday foes, the Miesville Mudhens, 6-0. Zach Harding got the Aces on the board early with an RBI-double. Reid Hartmann scored on Harding’s hit after doubling himself. The Aces added two runs in the third inning. Harding walked, Nick Azar singled and Josh Thygesen drove in Harding and Azar on a two-run double to put the Aces up 3-0.
Hegge, Aces form a perfect match
Every team needs a role player. Not necessarily the kind that play on the field or court. Those players are important to team success. But every team needs someone who brings up the morale in the locker room. As former Lake City boys basketball coach Greg Berge would likely agree, there needs to be a leadership model in the locker room that works well for everyone involved. Who does a team turn to? Who brings the desire to win? Who brings the passion?
