MANSFIELD – If your household is anything like mine, most evenings include some form of that exhausting “I don’t know, what do you want to eat?” debate. On Thursday, Oct. 22, the Richland Area Chamber & Economic Development is solving the dinner problem while giving you a fun way to support local businesses.

MADISON TOWNSHIP — There is a need for all types of housing in Richland County, according to Barrett Thomas, who cited a countywide housing study in Richland County, completed around 2023. Thomas, senior economic development director for Richland Area Chamber & Economic Development, recently told Richland Source this includes market-rate housing.

COLUMBUS – For many Ohioans, autumn represents pumpkin carving, the harvest season, Halloween campouts, and corn mazes. Spotting the first glimpse of fall color — seeing the leaves changing to strong reds, vivid yellows, and bold oranges — is also a favorite activity. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) will help people find the best places to view the changing colors throughout the season with weekly updates starting next Thursday, Oct. 1.

Anyone who owns yard space asks a similar question, “What can I do to improve the look of my lawn?” I haven’t mowed my lawn in about two weeks. It has not needed it. Wet soil and lower temperatures have slowed growth in my shady lawn. Before we start in autumn, I believe that you could over-seed sparse parts of your lawn. The rains that arrive later in the Fall will bring the seeds along. When you over-seed, cover the seeds with straw to protect them as they germinate.

LEXINGTON — Superintendent Kevin Young said Lexington Local Schools’ recent Ohio School Report Card proves the hard work of students and staff is paying off. “Overall, we are very pleased with our results,” Young said.

MANSFIELD — Wiener King celebrated 50 years in business Saturday with $1 coneys, live music and a crowd that reminded owner Jimmy Smarjeff just how much the Mansfield community means to him. “It’s a big deal,” Smarjeff said. “It really is a big deal.” The anniversary celebration featured a ribbon cutting, music from Mark King and the Roadhouse Band and a 50/50 drawing benefiting the Domestic Violence Shelter in memory of the late Johnny Mathis.

ASHLAND — Coming into Saturday (Oct. 3) afternoon’s 102nd Homecoming game, Ashland University’s football team ranked eighth in NCAA Division II in total defense. And the Eagles’ opponent, Tiffin, was ranked first. Saturday’s game played out that way, with the Dragons earning a 14-9 win over the Eagles. Ashland is 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, while Tiffin is 4-1, 3-0. “Traditional slobber-knocker,” said Ashland head coach Doug Geiser. “That was a physical football game.

NANKIN — Cross country runners from Madison and Mansfield Senior competed Saturday in a massive field of teams from across the Buckeye state. The Mapleton Cross Country Fall Classic boasted a field of 28 teams. Nearly 200 athletes competed in the boys high school race and nearly 150 girls participated in the girls high school race. As a team, the Madison girls finished 12th overall. In the boys race, Madison finished 11th overall, followed by Mansfield Senior (16th).

MANSFIELD — Four of the six Mansfield City Schools met or exceeded state standards last year, as measured by the latest round of Ohio School Report Cards. Every year, the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce releases its school report cards, which rate public schools and districts on a one-to-five star scale. Three stars means a district has met expectations. Five stars means a district has significantly exceeded expectations.

RICHLAND COUNTY — Three candidates are vying for Ohio’s 4th Congressional District seat in the Nov. 3 general election. Republican incumbent Jim Jordan faces Democrat Joshua Kolasinski and independent Tracey Tackett. The annual salary for the two-year congressional term is $174,000. The fourth district encompasses Richland County and Delaware County among Source Media Properties areas. Here is a look at all three candidates, in alphabetical order.
