Richmond defender Mutaz El Nour has been named in the Smithy's VFL Team of the Year squad of 48, for the second consecutive year. The key defender played 18 games in 2026, leading from the front, helping develop young key back men throughout the season under coach Jack Madgen. El Nour was selected in the Smithy’s VFL State Team squad of 43 this season, following a strong start to his campaign, when he collected 16 and 17 disposals in Rounds 1 and 2 respectively.

From pick No.7 in the 2025 AFL draft to making his AFL debut in Round 7 of the 2026 season, Sam Cumming has quickly established himself as a key pillar of Richmond’s midfield brigade. After playing 14 games in his first year, the 19-year-old was grateful for the exposure and hopes to build on his form as he embarks on a big 2027 campaign. “It was good. I definitely had a few challenges along the way, but I think I learnt a lot, and I’m just ready to go for next year,” Cumming told Richmond Media.

It’s no wonder Tim Taranto is a raging favourite to win his third Jack Dyer Medal in only four years at Richmond. A comprehensive statistical analysis of the Club’s playing group for the 2026 season highlights the terrific form Taranto displayed over the course of the home-and-away rounds.
