State officials are accepting applications for $1,000 clean air grants through Fri., July 17. The California Clean Air Day Microgrant program funds community events taking place the week before California Clean Air Day, which is Oct. 7. Events must raise awareness of Clean Air Day and engage at least 100 participants. In previous years, qualifying events have included bike or walk to school days, clean air fairs, and indoor air quality education seminars.
Teen paralyzed in 2025 Richmond shooting wanted to become a firefighter
The year he turned 18, while his classmates went to prom and graduated from high school, Nehemiah Montes’ biggest accomplishment was moving an arm and feeling sensation in his right leg. Montes missed those hallmark life moments, and will likely miss many more, because he was shot three times last December during a robbery in Richmond, just 10 days before his 18th birthday.

Saying goodbye to ‘Coach Turner.’ Beloved school mentor for generations of Richmonders retires
During Robert Turner’s final week at WCCUSD, at least 10 students stopped by his office in the span of an hour — to say hello, ask for advice or simply spend time in the safe space he had created. Every student who walked through the door was greeted with a wide smile and an affectionate nickname. When Turner told them to come back later, many groaned, and a few returned anyway, hoping he had finished talking to Richmondside about his decision to retire after 45 years with the district.

If you’re driving along Stenmark Drive to Point San Pablo, the road ends at a fork. Your only choice is to turn right and head up over the hill to Point San Pablo Harbor. But on a recent Saturday morning about two dozen people went left and ventured beyond a gate that is usually locked. Salesian Youth Club makes a lasting impression on Richmond youths
One of the blue children’s handprints on the wall of the West County Salesian Youth Club says it all. This particular print was put there three decades ago by then 10-year-old David Arriaga, who said he used to walk three blocks from his home to the club almost every afternoon after school to play sports and do arts and crafts. “The handprint brings back a lot of memories,” Arriaga told Richmondside during a recent tour of the central Richmond center. “We all needed to be kept out of trouble.
