We practise public-interest journalism.
Media concentration, layoffs, advertising so pervasive it becomes the content: the world of journalism is in crisis. Ricochet is an audacious response to a difficult context. Independent, dedicated to investigative journalism and incisive opinion, Ricochet seeks to illuminate the cultural and political diversity within Canada.
Ricochet is the product of collaboration between anglophones and francophones in a plurinational Canada, informed by an understanding of our colonial histories and supportive of contemporary Indigenous struggles. Bringing together English and French, Ricochet is composed of two distinct editions that maintain editorial independence.
Crowdfunded and serving the public interest, Ricochet provides entirely free content, contrary to the current tendency to hide information behind paywalls. By supporting a new model of media, our readers are financing real independent journalism.
Founded in 2014, Ricochet is a multiplatform news outlet, with offices in Vancouver and Montreal. Source

As he marks his 90th year, David Suzuki says he’s been looking back on his life’s work with mixed feelings and a heavy heart. “I have failed,” said Suzuki, who recently joined host Adrian Harewood on Ricochet’s podcast In Bed with the Elephant to talk about his career and legacy as one of Canada’s most passionate champions for a livable future. He says he’s ultimately failed to show the public that the economy is just a human construct based on extracting and exploiting our natural surroundings.
‘Dumpster fire’: Postmedia’s decade of pushing Canada’s politics to the right
More than half of Canadian daily newspapers are owned by Postmedia, giving the MAGA-aligned newspaper chain enormous influence over the flow of information and how current events are perceived across the country. In addition to its explicitly Conservative flagship national newspaper, the National Post, Postmedia has a monopoly on major daily newspapers in Ottawa, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Saskatoon and Regina, in addition to owning the Toronto Sun and Montreal Gazette.

One year after Trump’s aid cuts, the world’s poorest people are paying the price
One year after the second Trump administration moved to dismantle USAID, leaving a gap of more than US$35 billion across more than 120 countries, the future of global aid remains uncertain and millions of lives are now at risk. The rapid closure disrupted life-saving projects related to food security, clean water, health care, poverty reduction, gender-based violence prevention and human rights Beyond USAID, the scale of the decline in foreign aid is staggering.

What Montreal's police scandal reveals about systemic racism in Quebec
Shocking allegations of police racism and racial profiling in Montreal’s Montreal-North borough recently made national headlines, reverberating across the city and beyond. On June 12, Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher called an unprecedented 10:30 p.m. press conference to announce the entire night patrol (16 police officers in total) from Montreal-North’s Station 39 had been disbanded and under investigation for racist and hateful acts allegedly committed against Black and Arab citizens.

Canadian Mining in Ecuador
Throughout 2025, Ricochet senior investigative journalist Brandi Morin, with photojournalists Ian Willms and Julien Defourny, travelled to Ecuador to investigate Canadian mining giants that have been trampling over Indigenous rights and sovereignty. In a four part feature series, Brandi reports on the brewing conflict between the Indigenous communities and the Canadian companies, as well as the scars, both physical and mental, left as more and more ancestral lands are stolen for development.
Thunder Bay police change media policy following closed door oversight meeting
On June 12, we published this article, revealing for the first time a nearly two-year struggle to get journalist Jon Thompson added to the (local) media list of the Thunder Bay Police Service. For a changing roster of made up reasons, and definitely not in retaliation for prior award-winning reporting that had embarrassed the department, the police force would not send Jon official communications he needs to do his job.
If Canada’s housing ministry won't listen to tenants, we'll go directly to the minister
When hundreds of tenants shut down the federal housing office in Ottawa earlier this month, I was part of a small group that managed to reach the 11th floor to demand a meeting with the minister. Housing Minister Gregor Robertson’s office refused to listen to us. The department even threatened tenants with arrest. More than 300 tenants from across the country filled the lobby of the Ministry of Housing, triggering a building shutdown.
