Grand Island Public Library (Courtesy photo) GRAND ISLAND – More than 100 libraries across Nebraska are participating in the Second Annual Library Fall Crawl, taking place from Tuesday, Sept. 1 through Monday, Nov. 30. The Grand Island Public Library will be taking part. You can pick up a Library Fall Crawl booklet at the library located at 1124 W.

GRAND ISLAND – The Grand Island Public Library invites area artists ages 18 and older to display up to three pieces of art in the annual non-juried Community Art Show. The submission period for artwork is Wednesday, Sept. 16, through Wednesday, Sept. 30. The show will be displayed Thursday, Oct. 1, through Friday Nov. 13, 2026. The Library asks that artists pick up their art between Saturday, Nov. 14 and Saturday, Nov. 21.

The Grand Island City Council approved the 2027 budget at their Sept. 8 meeting. (Carol Bryant, Central Nebraska Today) GRAND ISLAND – Grand Island’s City Council approved Sept. 8 keeping the city’s property tax asking at $12,207,540, which is no increase over the previous year. The mill levy was decreased from 0.241485 to 0.227797 to keep the property tax asking the same.

GRAND ISLAND — Despite being primarily corn country, the central Nebraska region was well represented by cowboys and cowgirls at the Nebraska State Fair’s annual high school rodeo on Labor Day. The action played out under a bright sky accessorized by scattered willowy clouds in temperatures that reached the neighborhood of 100 degrees at the end.

U.S. Department of Transportation, Courtesy AURORA — The Aurora Police Department participated in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over national traffic enforcement campaign from Aug. 21 through Sept. 7. During the campaign, officers issued 70 traffic warnings and 9 citations for a total of 79 traffic offenses.

Barb Paulick is a new member of Grand Island's City Council. Mayor Roger Steele appointed her Sept. 8 to serve the remainder of the term of her late husband, Mike Paulick, who died Aug. 25. City Council voted 9-0 to approve Barb Paulick's appointment to City Council. (Carol Bryant, Central Nebraska Today) GRAND ISLAND – Grand Island’s City Council voted 9-0 Sept. 8 to approve appointing Barb Paulick to represent Ward 4, replacing her late husband. Paulick’s husband, Mike Paulick, 75, died Aug. 25.

Railroad crossing at night, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today) OXFORD — Weather permitting, a railroad crossing project will begin Monday, Sept. 14 on U.S. Highway (US-136) at reference post 12.72, two miles east of Oxford, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. The crossing repair work is being done by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF). Follow the marked detour, which will utilize Nebraska Highway 89 (N-89) and Nebraska Highway 46 (N-46).

KEARNEY — The Kearney High School Bearcat Marching Band plans to soar high, but not too high, in their show “Icarus” during the 2026 marching band season. The members of the marching band could be found where they are each morning, at the practice field under the lights prior to sunrise. On Wednesday, Sept. 9, the band was working on setting their final spots in their first movement.

Grand Island Lutheran volleyball lost it’s first two sets to Riverside 25-16 in it’s home triangular before beating Elba in two sets 25-10, 25-12.
