On this page Thanks to thousands of RSPB campaigners, supporters and nature lovers who contacted their MSPs, Swifts in Scotland are now a major step closer to having more of the safe nesting sites they desperately need. Scotland made history yesterday by becoming the first UK country to introduce a legal requirement that should see nesting bricks for Swifts included in new buildings.
Stop Berwick Bank!
Why is Berwick Bank so bad? Berwick Bank is predicted to kill thousands of seabirds every year, including Guillemots, Kittiwakes, Razorbills, Gannets and Puffins. Scientists estimate more than 4,000 birds could die in its first year, and tens of thousands over its 35 year lifespan. Some seabird colonies could be decimated, like those at St Abbs Head site where Kittiwake populations to be reduced by as much as 62%, and Guillemots populations by 32%.

Biodiversity Net Gain proposals risk nature's recovery
Read more These proposals raise three major concerns: 1. Exempting small developments from BNG The UK Government proposes to exempt most small and medium-sized developments from BNG, including nearly all residential applications. Research suggests that these could make up 97% of planning approvals, and could lead to over 215,000 hectares of nature lost over the next decade, with no requirement to restore it.
Swift and swallow window stickers
Stickers to prevent birds flying into windows and doors. These designs look beautiful when light shines through them too. Pack contains two swallows and three swifts. These stickers cling tight to glass without adhesive and peel off without leaving a mark. When applying window stickers, please keep in mind that birds are used to flying through small gaps, so one sticker per window is unlikely to deter them. The greater the surface area you can cover, the more effective your deterrent will be.
RSPB Sparrow terrace nest box
Product description Provides three separate nest boxes in one timber terrace, each with its own 32mm entrance hole. Beautifully made in the UK. RSPB nest boxes provide a safe and snug place for birds to roost and nest. Unlike cheaper alternatives, our bird houses are made from FSC® certified timber and have excellent insulation properties. RSPB Swift nest box
Product description The RSPB Swift nest box fits directly beneath even the narrowest of eaves, and its sloping roof improves durability and makes it hard for predators to gain purchase. Its entry hole measures 28 x 65mm and is designed to keep Starlings out, while its internal nest cup will encourage any Swift inspecting the box to take up residence. Swifts prefer to occupy nest boxes that contain a nest cup, compared to those without.
One Last Farm: Another Lost Chance?
Given the heavily depleted status of nature in the UK and its continued fragmentation as yet more swathes of land are set aside for housing, farms are playing an increasingly vital role in the preservation of wildlife. While serving as safe havens for species looking to raise their young and forage, farms can also help to fulfill an intended purpose for greenbelt land in preventing urban sprawl and granting wildlife safe passageways with which to move freely throughout the country.
