The SkyTrain serves more than 349,000 weekday riders across Metro Vancouver. (Submitted/TransLink) Every day, thousands of residents rely on public transit to attend school, work, and get around their community. Originally built for the Expo 86 world fair, Vancouver’s SkyTrain transformed an attraction into a necessity for residents. The first SkyTrain stations connected Vancouver, Burnaby, and New Westminster. Today, the system has expanded to three lines and across Metro Vancouver.

The organization, which supports communities across B.C., reports that period poverty impacts health, education, employment, and dignity, as some individuals are forced to choose between purchasing menstrual products and other basic necessities.

Andrew Code, a director at PJT Partners’ Strategic Capital Markets team, won the Distinguished Alumni Award. Performing artist Argel Monte de Ramos received the Outstanding Young Alumni Award. Dr. Farah Rattansi, founder and clinical director of My Empower Therapy, took home the Alumni Excellence Award.

Suhana Gill graduated from KPU’s political science program in June. (Submitted) Suhana Gill will run for Surrey city council in the 2026 municipal election. Gill, who was the Kwantlen Student Association’s women’s representative for the 2024-25 term, will run with Doug McCallum and the Safe Surrey Coalition. “I am running because Surrey is changing rapidly, and our council needs leadership that reflects our actual demographic reality,” Gill wrote in a statement to The Runner.

News 1130 and Sportsnet 650 shut down in early July. (Diego Minor Martínez) News 1130 was Vancouver’s only 24-hour news radio station — and now it’s off the air. The end of News 1130 represents a significant change for Vancouver, as the city has lost a strong source of news and connection that served the community for decades.

(Submitted) The City of Surrey plans to build an arena, and create a new home for the Vancouver Giants. The City Centre Arena and Cultural Event Centre is an agreement between the city and the Surrey City Development Corporation, set to complete by 2030. The City of Surrey estimates it will generate $2.4 billion in economic benefits across the next 10 years.

After a year hiatus following the 2025 Lapu-Lapu Day tragedy, the book festival returns. (Submitted) The Filipino Canadian Book Festival returns for another weekend of literature, storytelling, and community from Aug. 14 to 17 in Vancouver. The idea began when Nathalie De Los Santos, the festival’s marketing director, attended the Liwanag Literary Festival in Long Beach, Calif. with her friend and previous collaborator.

“Unapoligetically Queer” was the theme of the 48th annual Vancouver Pride Parade. The parade returned to the streets of Vancouver on Aug. 2. Among the participants was Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Office of Equity and Inclusive Communities. Continue Reading
