What Is Carotid Endarterectomy? Carotid endarterectomy is a surgical procedure that involves removing plaque from the carotid arteries in the neck. Everybody has two carotid arteries in the neck — one on each side. Plaque buildup in these arteries, also called atherosclerosis, can cause them to narrow. This can restrict blood flow to the brain, or a small piece of plaque might break loose, leading to a stroke or a transient ischemic attack, also called a TIA or mini-stroke.

Robin Stoner, AuD, makes a practice of protecting her hearing when she attends concerts. "I'm amazed at how many people don't wear earplugs," says Stoner, an audiologist at Rush University Medical Center. She believes that people attending summer music festivals, or any rock or pop concert, need to be as concerned about hearing damage as they are about sun damage.

Rush University System for Health has received Certificate of Need approval from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board for a new outpatient medical office building in Elmhurst. The proposed 22,695-square-foot facility, to be located at 107 N. York St., will expand access to Rush services for patients in the western suburbs and support growing demand for care in the region.

Rush University recently selected five faculty members as Cohn Fellows who will receive grant support for their research across a variety of disciplines. Each year, the Cohn Family Foundation provides grant funding to support junior faculty at Rush University who are participating as mentees in the Rush Research Mentoring Program. Selected mentees receive support to gather preliminary data for research proposals and to advance their ongoing research activities.

Jackie Bollinger’s summer break is anything but a break. The Oak Park native is heading into her junior year at the University of Michigan. But from June to August, she’s working with Rush’s Arka Mallela, MD, MS, assistant professor, Department of Neurological Surgery, through the Summer Scholars Program in the Division of Translational Science at Rush Medical College.
