Lynn Mohr, PhD, APRN, professor, Department of Women, Children and Nursing, talks about that wherever she goes, animals follow. Mohr grew up on a farm in Iowa and spent her summers working for her local veterinarian. From a young age, she knew what she wanted to do with her life, and that was to take care of animals. Or so she thought. “I couldn’t get into veterinary school at the time, because being a woman, they did not accept women,” Mohr says.

A new study from Rush suggests one more way diet may support brain health. Researchers found an association between the MIND diet and healthier blood vessels in the brain, larger brain volume and better cognitive function. "We found that people who more closely followed the MIND diet had lower levels of cerebral small vessel disease and healthier brain structure,” said , PhD, study author and assistant professor in the Rush Department of Internal Medicine.

By Kevin McKeough More than 1,700 Rush patients are using a free smartphone app to track important personal health data they share with their doctor and to get coaching on how to be healthier. Rush University Medical Center co-developed the app with Nuna, Inc., a San Francisco technology company, and was the first hospital in the country to make it available to patients.

James Jablonowski lived a life serving others, with a risk to himself. He’s a retired Chicago firefighter and veteran whose years of service increased his risk for a wide range of cancers. Exposure to aerosolized chemicals — from inhaling the smoke at fires and exposure to diesel fumes — may increase the risk of cancers in first responders. “Our union offered a blood test to screen for a series of cancers,” says the 71-year-old, a lifelong resident of Chicago’s Northwest Side.

An ocean away from home, Ned Barker, woke up in the middle of the night feeling like his hotel room was spinning. Ned is a social scientist from the U.K. who studies the relationships between technology and the human body. He flew in earlier that day from London to present his work at a conference. He and a colleague relaxed afterward over a Chicago pizza and a pint of beer. With a flight back home in the morning, Ned looked forward to calling it an early night.

The Chicago Sports Summit is on a 10-year winning streak. For the past decade, the annual event has generated conversations about the biggest trends in sports while supporting orthopedic research at Rush. The 10th annual summit, hosted by Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, will gather leading voices in the sports industry on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago for breakfast, a silent auction, networking and a program covering the latest topics in sports.

Encouraged by the meaningful difference their past giving has made, the donor wanted to do more. Now they’ve made a new $13.5 million gift to Rush University System for Health that will help West Side community members and Rush students facing some of life’s most difficult challenges.

General Entry Master’s and MSN Post-Licensure students at Rush University’s College of Nursing shared their final capstone presentations with fellow students, staff and faculty on August 19. Students spend two terms working on their capstone presentations. They use the first term to plan and the second term to evaluate and implement their project.
