That Kristin Nielsen would end up in the defence industry was far from given. She grew up in Karlskoga, where Saab has had a presence since 2000, having acquired Alfred Nobel's Bofors. "Saab has always been there in the background growing up. But I always felt I didn't want to work in the defence industry. Then the war in Ukraine happened, and I had to reconsider. I feel there is a need for a Swedish defence industry, and that I actually want to contribute to it," she says.
Innovation meeting a global need
The true value of any defence capability lies not only in its technical performance, but in its ability to deliver on its promise. Few examples illustrate this better than Saab's AEW&C solution GlobalEye. Since its first flight in 2018, GlobalEye has evolved from a pioneering concept into a proven operational capability.
Saab receives order for GlobalEye
“This order underscores our commitment to providing customers with mission-proven, multi-domain AEW&C capability. The increasing international interest in GlobalEye reflects its effectiveness and reliability in modern air defence operations”, says Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab. GlobalEye is an advanced multi-domain AEW&C solution with an array of active and passive sensors that provide long-range detection and identification of objects in the air, at sea and over land.

Embraer will take responsibility for assembling the aircraft, serving as a complement to Saab’s final assembly line located in Linköping, Sweden, to meet global demand for the Swedish fighter.

Brazil's Gripen E fighters participate in their first multinational exercise outside Brazil
Operating from Cerro Moreno Air Base in Antofagasta, Chile, the exercise brought together more than 1,500 military personnel from the participating countries and around 60 aircraft, which completed more than 250 flight hours across different missions on site. Alongside aircraft from Chile, Argentina, Colombia, the United States and Paraguay, the Gripen fighters were carrying out air operations typical of conventional warfare, with air forces operating under a single command and in coalition.
NATO selects Saab’s GlobalEye
At this point, Saab has not signed a contract or received an order related to the announcement. NATO has identified the need to replace its existing AEW&C capability as part of a broader effort to modernise and strengthen the Alliance’s surveillance and situational awareness capabilities. The announcement by the NATO Secretary General confirms that Saab’s GlobalEye is NATO’s chosen solution for its future AEW&C capability.

60 Systems in 60 Days: Saab's Remarkable Giraffe 1X Radar Delivery
So far, every Giraffe 1X system produced based on forecasts has been sold. This speaks volumes about a product that has nearly tripled its production capacity in 2025 compared to the previous year. In fact, Saab sold as many Giraffe 1X systems in 2025 as it had sold in total from the system's market launch in 2021 until the start of 2025. "The Giraffe 1X system is highly regarded and designed to address today's threats, such as drones," says Emma Berglund, Head of Product Unit Giraffe 1X.
