Search ArticlesAvian flu may mean that seabirds also need a proper beach break
July is holiday time, but for those visiting the coast, Avian flu has turned the seaside meet-and-greet into a polite long-distance wave. South Africans love watching gulls, terns and cormorants patrol the shoreline. They steal chips, pose for photographs and act as if they own the beach. Right now, however, the kindest thing holidaymakers can do is admire them from afar. South Africa’s Western Cape has faced a serious outbreak of highly pathogenic avian flu.
Obesity or just fat: When does extra weight harm your health
Obesity is at the centre of South Africa’s current debate about weight-loss injections. Medicines such as GLP-1 receptor agonists have changed treatment options, but they have also revived a sensitive question. How do you know whether you are dealing with a medical condition or simply carrying extra weight? The distinction matters because excess body fat exists on a spectrum. Nearly half of adult South Africans are overweight or living with obesity, according to local estimates.
Spam calls in South Africa: Will new laws be enough to stop them?
Spam calls interrupt daily life, whether you are in Johannesburg traffic or answering a late call from abroad. South Africans have become uncomfortably used to calls from unknown numbers offering insurance, airtime upgrades or debt solutions. And the scale of the problem is growing. Recently, Truecaller told BusinessTech that monthly spam call volumes were nearly 23% higher on average in the first five months of 2026. Spam messages rose even faster, increasing by 61.2% over the same period.

Naomi Osaka’s Kimono moment at Wimbledon proves fashion can speak louder than a scoreboard
Naomi Osaka has never played by tennis fashion’s unwritten rules, and Wimbledon 2026 proved it again. Her walk-in outfit ahead of the third round against Daria Kasatkina was a draped, layered Japanese ceremonial-style kimono, all white to satisfy the All England Club’s strict dress code, with cherry blossoms embroidered into the fabric and even echoed in her hairstyle. The look was designed by Tokyo-based designer Hana Yagi, who has now created several of Osaka’s most talked-about pieces.

Why South Africa’s ’10th province’ isn’t a place. It’s every one of us abroad
Geoff Johnson posted something this week that stopped me mid-scroll. Geoff runs the annual SA charity golf day, and I’ve known him for years through the expat and business circles here in London. He doesn’t do sentimental posts often. But this one was worth sharing. Thirty years to the day since Mandela’s state visit to the UK, Geoff reminded his network of something Mandela once said to a small group of South Africans in London. I hadn’t thought about that trip in years.

Mosquitoes: Why scientists study them more than any other insect
Mosquitoes may seem like a small nuisance on a summer evening, but they are among the most studied creatures on Earth. Scientists investigate them because a few species can spread diseases that affect millions of people, especially across sub-Saharan Africa. More than 3 500 mosquito species exist worldwide, yet only a small group can transmit malaria. The Anopheles gambiae species complex is one of the most efficient malaria vectors.
