This Is Precious

During the week I was interviewed on a podcast and I was asked at the end to list three books that have impacted my life. These kinds of questions are often asked in media interviews and I dread them. I simply don’t remember names of book or films or songs. In fact, in the main, I don’t remember books or films or songs. As in, the actual words, plots and lyrics1. I’ll remember, however, in complex detail, the key concepts or messages. You know, human vibes and takes.

Thank you for bearing with me while I took a month off to float about and be feral in France. I’d got myself a little overwhelmed and overstimulated. Dirt and hanging at tabacs in towns that no tourist visits and the fetid-but-familiar smell of my 21-year-old sleeping bag was required. I just got back. And I’m pock-marked with mosquito bites and feel much clearer. And, per a thesis in I Eat the Stars, more compelled than ever.

Confession: I’ve run out of hot takes. I’m just hot. And the past little while has “taken it out of me”. So I’m pulsing outta here for a month to rest my nervous system and rebuild my excitement reserves. This is Precious is a reader-supported publication. I write to you from a cafe in a small neighbourhood on the outskirts of Paris. I’ve been here almost five hours on my laptop ordering a nonsensical array of beverages and foodstuffs every hour or so, to pay my way. The place is packed. Kids are playing chess (school has been cancelled), dogs are under the tables, the elderly are reading, people are whispering into their phones, trying to hold work Zoom calls.

It’s two years to the week since I started writing I EAT THE STARS: How to live fully and beautifully in a collapsing world. It took me two months to write the first chapter (initially here on Substack as a serialisation). I started a relationship with a wild Corsican man the exact same week; we broke up a few days after I finished writing the book. I entered peri-menopause. Trump came back into power. We surpassed the seventh of the nine planetary boundaries. We crossed the 1.5C IPCC threshold.
