Beginning in 2022, when I began research for a biography of John Albert Broadus, until its publication earlier this year, it was my pleasure to spend un-numbered hours with the Southern Seminary founder. More than 35 students and faculty from Southern, New Orleans, Southeastern, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminaries spent two weeks in late May and early June on a joint mission trip to the Asia-Pacific region. Faculty members from the seminaries say the unprecedented partnership pictures the Southern Baptist Convention cooperating at its best.

When Jeff Robinson arrived in Louisville in January 2000, he planned to earn an MDiv and prepare for pastoral ministry. What he did not expect was that the next two decades would bind his life, work, and family so closely to Southern Seminary that friends now jokingly call him “Mister Southern Seminary.” Robinson now serves as president and editor of The Baptist Courier. John D. Wilsey, Chair of the Church History department at Southern Seminary, received one of the highest intellectual honors this summer as the Heritage Foundation awarded him with a Freedom and Opportunity Academic Prize. The prize recognizes scholarship that defends and advances values of freedom and opportunity.

Congregations enter their places of worship every Sunday morning without having rehearsed a note. But they will soon lift their voices in singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to the glory of God. Nobody warmed up in the car. They will simply enter, find the melody already familiar, and sing. That gap between an unrehearsed congregation and a coherent, gospel-shaped worship service is where Matthew Westerholm, professor and Chair of Biblical Worship at Southern Seminary, has spent his career.
