Born in Charleston, Dr. Louis D. Rubin Jr. grew up between two worlds: the quiet, middle-class uptown streets of his childhood and the vibrant, artistic downtown that later shaped his imagination. Though he once dreamed of becoming a baseball player, writing ultimately claimed his life’s focus, leading him to earn his master’s and PhD at Johns Hopkins University and later found the graduate creative writing program at Hollins College.
