Natalie Daise talks with Zinai, a future military doctor who values her beautiful relationship with God and her Grandma. When I See Myself, I See…, is a powerful portrait series by acclaimed storyteller and visual artist Natalie Daise. The exhibition highlights the creativity, dreams and lived experiences of 21 Voorhees University GEAR UP students. Daise interviewed students at South Carolina middle schools to learn about their hopes, dreams, aspirations and fears.

Born in Charleston, Dr. Louis D. Rubin Jr. grew up between two worlds: the quiet, middle-class uptown streets of his childhood and the vibrant, artistic downtown that later shaped his imagination. Though he once dreamed of becoming a baseball player, writing ultimately claimed his life’s focus, leading him to earn his master’s and PhD at Johns Hopkins University and later found the graduate creative writing program at Hollins College.

With guests Dr. Marquice Clark, Principal, Cleveland Academy of Leadership, Spartanburg School District Seven and Brian Perrin, Principal, Merrywood Elementary School, Greenwood School District 50. A central theme of our Beating the Odds Investigative Study was holding high expectations of everyone, for everyone. Everyone at these excellent schools expected great things from their students, from one another, and from themselves.

What happens when you give curious students the tools to create? You get thoughtful questions, creative solutions, plenty of teamwork—and stories worth sharing. Earlier this summer, the Goldfish Brains premiered a video they brought to life, showcasing not just what they learned, but how they learned it. Here's to Deuce, Flynn and Zion and their bright minds who continue to inspire us with every new ideas.
