40 YEARS AGO • OCTOBER 9, 1986 MOUNTAIN BELL CELEBRATES In addition to his other duties, Dr. Peek also performed another kind of operation in Thompson Falls in 1905. The ingenious fellow is credited with starting the city’s first telephone exchange with six telephones. Between 1913 and 1914, a new switchboard was installed to serve a growing population of phones - 66.

Ron Kazmierczak
Ron Kazmierczak was born in Laona, Wisconsin, on May 24, 1938. He graduated from Laona High School and attended St. Norbert College, the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay, Oshkosh State College, San Francisco State College, and the University of Montana. In 1958, Ron enlisted in the United States Army and was sent to Berlin, Germany. During his tour in Berlin, the Berlin Wall was built. He was discharged in 1962 and returned to the University of Montana to finish his college education.
Geraldine DeTienne
Geraldine Mae Woods DeTienne, 93, of Hot Springs went home to be with her Lord on Friday, September 25, 2026. She passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family. She was born on April 21, 1933, in Camas, Mont., to Ernest and Eleanor Woods and was the eldest of 5 children. She was raised primarily in the Lonepine area with some of her childhood years spent in Washington and California.

Fundraiser a sweet success
The famous Willy Wonka made an appearance at Clark Fork Valley Hospital (CFVH) last Thursday to provide a free roast beef meal to hospital staffers, but Wonka, alias Dr. Greg Hanson, the hospital's CEO, and his helpers - Golden Ticket, Violet Beauregarde, Charlie Bucket, and Oompa Loompa - also had bowls of colorful candy, marshmallows and a chocolate fountain for the staff.
