DJ, a five-star EDGE rusher, is known as one of the best defensive players in not only the state of Georgia, but in the nation in the class of 2027. The older of the brothers committed to Ohio State back in December of 2025 and is rated as the top player in his recruiting class on 247Sports.com.
The private classification enters a season of unknowns in 2026, but one of the knowns will be some of the top teams in the class. The 2025 season saw some movement at the top of a classification that has seen multiple elite schools dominate its short history, but this year a number of teams already look like championship contenders. Hebron Christian is entering the 2026 season after winning its second straight championship. However, the team will have its third coach in three seasons.
There will be a new football state champion crowned in Class 2A this season following the reclassification cycle that sent two-time defending state champion Carver-Columbus into Class 3A. Now, eight regions that are unique in their own respect will battle for the prize in a wide-open field of teams. There are more than a dozen schools that are in Class 2A, but do not have football programs—leaving 57 football teams in the class this fall.
With the 2026 football season on the horizon, Class 6A is full of storylines heading into an interesting season. With many teams in new regions and new classifications, the 2026 season will be one of the most exciting in recent memory. Is this Effingham County’s year? Effingham County is in a pivotal year under Coach Ford. The Rebels have a 34-20 record under Coach Ford, but this coming season will feature the most talented team he has had.
Gainesville is entering one of the most important years in the program’s storied history. The Red Elephants are the state’s third-winningest program, behind only LaGrange and Valdosta. In the 112 seasons of Gainesville football, the team has made the finals 10 times but has come away with only one championship. This year is yet another chance for the program to win a title and maybe the best chance they have had since that 2012 state championship.
The numbers might have changed, but the teams – for the most part – remained the same. Welcome to the newly-minted Class 4A, which might look awfully like Class 3A from the days of old. The defending champions from Class 3A, Sandy Creek, are here in Region 4 alongside local rivals like Fayette County and Riverdale. Calhoun, which won the 2024 championship, is in Region 7 and is tied with Region 6 for the smallest region in the class with six teams.
The GHSA redubbed Class 7A as the highest classification for the next two years this past November after two school years spent operating within a 1-6A system. Class 7A was introduced for the first time in 2016 and housed the schools with the largest enrollment for the next eight seasons before the introduction of a new Class A-3A Private classification starting in 2024-25 re-stratified the landscape and shifted Class 6A back into the position of largest classification.
The Class 3A classification has a new look with the mostly former Class 2A teams spread across the league. The class will have eight new regions and multiple title contenders and with so many high-end teams, regions have only gotten tougher and teams will need to elevate to win championships in this new era of Class 3A football. Region 1 Defending 2A champion Carver-Columbus and Class A-DI champion Worth County are now in Region 1.
By this point in the 2027 recruiting cycle, almost all of the top players in the country are committed. However, there are still some players who are waiting it out and have remained uncommitted heading into July. Last season, at Howard, he totaled 57 tackles and had four interceptions.
After a solid sophomore year, Douglas County tight end Faraji Tucker has garnered interest from numerous schools as he currently sits at 28 Division I offers entering his junior season with the Wildcats. Tucker now has the next two years to continue building those relationships and figure out where he wants to go to play college football. On Georgia High School Sports Daily, Tucker spoke about stepping up as an upperclassman this season. “I think it’s really exciting,” Tucker said.
