The Carlmont Scots varsity girls volleyball team defeated the Menlo-Atherton Bears 3-1 on Tuesday, Sept. 22. The Scots maintained strong energy and aggression throughout the match and battled through each set to secure the win. The victory continued the Scots strong start to the season as the team prepares to face other top teams in the league. As the fall season approaches, many grocery stores, including Trader Joe’s, dive into the season early with a variety of themed food items. Apple, cinnamon, and, most prominently, pumpkin, have become key ingredients in many treats and snacks throughout Trader Joe’s aisles. The store uses its own brand to keep prices lower and offer a wide variety of options, which entices many customers to choose it over other grocery stores.

According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, all gray wolves have been listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) since 1978 throughout the contiguous United States and Mexico, which has allowed for the effective protection of preventing their extinction and maintaining the nation’s rich biological diversity. Conservationists have highlighted the importance of wolves in ecosystems across the country as keystone predators.

Carlmont High School made the decision to hire a new college and career counselor, a move that comes at a time when the number of students assigned to each school counselor has increased. “Counselors averaged about 280 students over the past decade,” said Connie Dominguez, a Carlmont counselor. “But this year our caseloads increased in order to have the funds to hire a college counselor to oversee the College Center.

On Sept. 16, 2026, Carlmont’s varsity flag football team played against Hillsdale High School in a four-quarter game. The Scots started the season 3-3 as they were still trying to find their groove, but they found it against Hillsdale. Coming back from an early touchdown deficit, they were able to get the win with a final score of 41-12. Carlmont students are showing their love for numerous scientific disciplines by founding a multitude of new STEM clubs this school year. The umbrella term “STEM” refers to academic disciplines that are related to science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. These disciplines have been growing in popularity. According to the Walton Family Foundation, nearly 75% of Gen Z youth are interested in STEM. This interest is now being reflected in Carlmont’s student body.

Zara is a junior at Carlmont High School, in the class of 2027. Her current interests are business and photography. She enjoys snowboarding, camping, traveling, and other outdoor activities. This is her third year publishing her work, and she is currently working in marketing.

For most kindergartners, a book filled with maps might not be the most exciting present. For Justin Hom, it was the beginning of a lifelong interest. When Justin Hom was 5 years old, his father, Jeffrey Hom, recalls that the boy received an atlas for Christmas and read it from front to back. Even at his young age, he was especially taken by the section about space, which sparked his curiosity in astronomy.

Community booths, outdoor dining, and vibrant music filled downtown San Mateo on Thursday, Sept. 17, as a part of the city’s September Nights on B Street. The event, and its earlier installation on Thursday, Sept. 10, closed down the main street in the evening to bring together residents of all ages through restaurants and live entertainment.
