1868 – Ratification of the 14th Amendment The 14th Amendment was ratified on this day in 1868. This guarantees birthright citizenship, prohibits states from depriving any person of due process, and mandates equal protection of the laws, ensuring that fundamental civil rights apply to all Americans equally. This amendment extended the rights and liberties granted by the Bill of Rights to formerly enslaved people shortly after they were granted freedom.
