By Anneshia Hardy, The AFRO There is a dangerous narrative taking shape in this country right now, one suggesting that the Voting Rights Act simply outlived its usefulness. That the protections once necessary during the Civil Rights era are now outdated remnants of a different America. That the country evolved beyond the conditions that made federal oversight necessary in the first place. But both history and the present tell a far more troubling story. The Voting Rights Act did not fail.

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a balanced $9.16 billion budget for fiscal year 2026-27. The new budget became effective July 1. It increases spending by $522 million, or 6.1%, over the current year and also includes 20,389.25 staff years, a net increase of 109. By Haley Crim Changes in homelessness policy in cities such as San Diego can cause issues such as unsafe sleeping situations, increased presence of individuals with mental illness, and more. The main problems with homelessness often stem from other causes, but blanket bans on sleeping in public areas can exacerbate existing issues. Whether taking a stroll through New York City or downtown San Diego, the homelessness crisis is all too apparent.

Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Joe was born on January 22, 1939. He moved to San Diego as a young man in 1962 to build his life. In 1964, he began his career at the San Diego Union-Tribune as a dispatcher-clerk. Over the years, he advanced into sales, managing accounts that included Goodyear, Jerome’s, the San Diego Opera, and The Old Globe, among many others. He was widely recognized for his work, receiving numerous awards and commendations throughout his career.

1908 – Thurgood Marshall is Born Thurgood Marshall was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 2, 1908. Marshall received his law degree from Howard University in 1933 before serving as the NAACP’s chief legal counsel. His most famous case was the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling in 1954 which overruled the “separate but equal” principle set by Plessy v. Ferguson. Marshall was confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice in 1967, becoming the first Black person to hold the position.
