A botched network configuration update took down the Google Cloud VMware Engine service (GCVE), the hyperscaler has confirmed. The service went down for users in Sydney (australia-southeast1), Melbourne (australia-southeast2), and Frankfurt (europe-west3) for almost 12 hours on July 14. Only Stretched Clusters, which extend compute resources across distributed sites or data centers, were impacted, with no disruption reported for standard GCVE services.

Nokia hopes operators are ready to embrace the AI-RAN hype cycle
Nokia claims to have launched the industry’s first commercial AI radio access network (AI-RAN) platform, promising to help carriers unlock “significantly more uplink and downlink capacity” from existing infrastructure. Built using the Finnish firm’s network architecture and with a little support from Nvidia's computing power, Nokia’s AI-RAN platform will be offered via a software subscription model.

Red Hat updated its OpenShift platform with new features designed to make it easier to migrate and manage virtual machines (VMs) across a cloud environment, updates that match many being put out by rivals that continue to highlight opportunities in attracting long-time VMware customers looking for alternatives in the market. The latest OpenShift 4.22 release includes a number of updates, but specific updates to its OpenShift Virtualization product is targeted at easing VM management.
OpenAI strengthens web infrastructure team with Cloudflare hire
OpenAI is building out the web infrastructure component of its tech stack, having poached Cloudflare engineering manager Kate Reznykova. Reznykova revealed the move in a post on X (Twitter), with her official title listed as "member of technical staff," per her LinkedIn. “ChatGPT has become part of how millions of people think, work, and build, and I’m really looking forward to helping shape what comes next alongside the remarkable team behind it,” the new hire wrote.

SK Telecom to test AI-RAN, physical AI for South Korea build out
SK Telecom (SKT) will build out AI radio access network (AI-RAN) infrastructure in South Korea. The operator will lead the Hyper-AI Network Infrastructure pilot project as part of the South Korean government’s 10-year AI Highway plan, which was first unveiled last year. SKT's involvement will include testing three physical AI services under the initiative: self-driving cars, humanoid robots, and quadruped robotics of the more canine sort, as powered by 5G standalone (SA).
Zayo Group names former Verizon exec Sowmyanarayan Sampath as CEO
Zayo Group has named Sowmyanarayan Sampath as the company's new CEO. Sampath, a former Verizon executive and most recently consumer CEO at the carrier, will take over from current CEO, Steve Smith, who is retiring. Sampath will take the helm at the company on September 1, 2026. He previously departed Verizon earlier this year, where he worked for more than a decade. Zayo confirmed that Smith will continue to serve on the company's board of directors.
