I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan (but currently between Grand Rapids and Marquette)! I graduated with my BFA in digital media with a focus in interactive design from Kendall College of Art & Design. By day, I’m a full-time graphic designer at Williams Group. By nights and weekends, I run this blog and spend a lot of time traveling and lighthouse hopping around Michigan. I love music, being outside, sweet wines, all four seasons (especially autumn), running, and hanging out with my friends. I started Selective Potential in September 2009 as a way to discover my own sense of personal style. Now I share my outfits, travels, and everyday life here on the blog. Lighthouses of the St. Marys River
We spent the most wonderful weekend on Drummond Island, which starts with a little adventure in itself — driving onto the car ferry in De Tour Village and crossing over to the island! We stayed at Drummond Island Resort, explored around the island, ate some good food and generally soaked up one last summer weekend, but you KNOW the real mission for me involved lighthouses.
West Michigan Weekend — Selective Potential
The cottage itself is called The Gertrude, and I am OBSESSED. 😂 It’s basically my Pinterest board come to life — cozy, colorful, collected, slightly quirky, and filled with all of those little details that make an old summer cottage feel like an old summer cottage. I took approximately 500 mental notes for whenever I finally have a house of my own someday.
Portage Lake North Pierhead
Portage Lake North Pierhead became lighthouse #112 on my list of “seen” lighthouses! It’s definitely not one of the state’s grand beauties, just a simple steel skeletal tower tucked inside the Portage Lake marina, but I loved learning the history behind it. Originally, the light stood at the end of the north pier where Portage Lake meets Lake Michigan.
Lilac season - Selective Potential
Ahhhh, lilac season in Marquette. Swoon city! What a beautiful sign that summer is here. I’ve been running down the bike path along the lakeshore recently… and always slow my pace down to pass one of these and just take a giant whiff. 😆 But this is one of my favorite times of the year… I mean, fall is forever my favorite, but this is a close second. Just those transitional seasons are the best. Except I’m really leaning hard into summer this year. Trying to figure out a way to slow down time… hahaha.
Tulip fields - Selective Potential
My favorite spring tradition! 🌷 I love visiting the tulip fields in Holland, Michigan. This is my 16th year taking photos here! (Missed a year at one point, oops, lol.) It’s just so magical every year. Elliot and I made the stop here on our way down to Illinois for his sister’s college graduation, and I’m so glad we made the trip.
Monet Garden - Selective Potential
One of my favorite trees to visit when I’m in West Michigan in May! (This is at the Monet Garden little pocket park in downtown Muskegon.) I usually come down every time this year, because the Upper Peninsula is slow to bloom and see spring… but everything is in full bloom downstate! I came down for the week for several reasons… girlfriends turning 40, usual appointments, visiting family, etc., but I absolutely love coming to downtown Muskegon.
Eagle Harbor Lighthouse — Selective Potential
But the weekend was lovely overall! I didn’t really get photos from the whole weekend, so just decided to do a solo blog post on the lighthouse itself, but I always post on my IG and stories of the full weekend. But we stayed at The Fitz, which was good! Just an interesting time of year, so wintry, and hard to get in and out of there a bit… and then it was also so busy, really glad we made reservations for dinner. I think most everyone was staying there to go to Mount Bohemia for the weekend.
Wetmore Landing - Selective Potential
Two winter posts in a weeeeek!? Who is she! I wasn’t actually planning on blogging recently, but it helps when you have fun winter adventures with your photog boyfriend who is so freaking good at taking photos, so here we are! It was super sunny out yesterday, still in the 20s, but… I knew we had to get out for a little bit to enjoy some winter scenery, and to feel better about couch rotting for the rest of the day.
Ice Skating at the Ore Dock — Selective Potential
First blog post in three months… oof! Hahaha, I’ve just been fully in holiday, cozy, hibernation mode. Took a few months off in November/December/January just to enjoy, not get out everyday to take photos, edit, I go hard in fall, which I love, but it’s been nice to lay low-key with blogging and any video creation the last couple of months. Plus, I was wrapping up a collaboration with Pure Michigan, which was so fun last year.
