With the advent of digital and smartphone technology, the essence of photography has plunged into a wholly artificial realm, questioning the very nature of realism. For Hiroshi Sugimoto, one of Japan’s most respected multidisciplinary contemporary artists, “true” photography has fallen into extinction.

His bewildering sculptures elicit a deep scrutiny into humanity and its sea of entangled emotions — loneliness, fragility, anxiety, tolerance, and confusion. Running until September 23, Mori Art Museum showcases “Ron Mueck,” the artist’s first major solo retrospective in Japan after eighteen years.

Spring has arrived in Hakone, and what better way to celebrate the flowering season than with a day at Pola Museum of Art through the exhibition’s spirit of spring. “SPRING RISING” is being shown at the museum until May 31 this year. Inspired by Hakone’s natural terrain, which developed from centuries of volcanic activity, the showcase fosters the symbiosis between Hakone’s innate beauty and art.

NEWS2026.3.16Text: Editor DESIGNART TOKYO, a well-established fall festival in Tokyo, celebrated its 10th anniversary will be held from October 30th to November 8th this year. The theme this year is “Hibiki”. In preparation for the event, they are currently accepting applications for exhibitors until May 31st, and are also offering the “UNDER 30” program, in which exhibitor fees are waived to support young artists and designers (until March 31st).
