Long before digital mapping platforms tracked every municipal pipe and valve, the City of Globe relied on the workers who buried the lines by hand. On Tuesday night, the Globe City Council recognized a cornerstone of that living history, honoring Water Department veteran David Kemp for 25 years of municipal service. Kemp’s quarter-century career trace back to an era when new public works employees proved their mettle on the city’s toughest routes.

The City of Globe has secured a $1 million state water infrastructure loan that includes more than 50% principal forgiveness to replace a major, leak-prone waterline along the old U.S. 60 corridor. The Globe City Council voted unanimously to adopt Resolution No. 1964, authorizing a loan agreement with the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona (WIFA) through its Drinking Water State Revolving Fund.

For the fifth year in a row, Round Mountain Baking Company has held its annual cookie fundraiser to support the Humane Society. Born from the pandemic, Round Mountain Baking Company was created to fulfill a community need. Owner and operator Cecilie Hudson, like many others, was feeling worn down by social distancing and quarantining. With Easter around the corner, she put together cookie-making kits for kids and charged only what it cost to put them together. It was intended as a one-time event.

Between Stairizona, the art at the Miami Gardens Walking Path, and several other artistic pursuits, locals have come to understand that when Love Where You Live is involved, there will be more color and beauty. In February 2023, the nonprofit decided to play with the idea of Globe being the Gila County seat. All around downtown Globe, running along Broad Street, little Gila Monsters are painted on the buildings of various businesses—in theme.

Public schools rely heavily on local funding, and for rural communities, that can create challenges that larger districts simply do not face. Gila County may have an average tax rate, but with fewer households contributing to the local tax base, there is ultimately less money available to support schools. Add in a small town like Miami, and resources can become even more limited.

The Aug. 24 Miami Town Council meeting was calm and concise, a noticeable departure from several of the meetings held in recent months. Even during Call to the Public, where tensions have often been highest, the majority of speakers shared a similar message. Thirteen people stepped up to the podium during Call to the Public, with nine offering support for Mayor Gil Madrid ahead of his hearing scheduled for Monday, Aug. 31, regarding his position.

Each year, San Carlos Apache College continues its mission to provide culturally rich programs and diverse classes, instilling the education pathways to student success for students across Arizona. The orientation event offered incoming students an introduction to the academic year, along with tools for academic success.
