This trail system was saved from housing development. And this time, the developers were in on it.
Photo: Don Kinney Just a few years ago, the land that is now the Old Creedmoor Nature Preserve near Raleigh, North Carolina, was slated for a housing development that would have deprived local mountain bikers of access to a popular social trail network. Fortunately, as the name suggests, the area was spared; trails were adopted, more were built, and the preserve is now established and managed by the Triangle Land Conservancy (TLC).
TAMBA raised almost $40K over three days to support local trails
Photo: Jazmine Kohl The Tahoe Area Mountain Bike Association (TAMBA) held its 14th annual mountain bike festival at the end of June, and by all accounts the event was a big success. How big? About $40,000 big. That’s enough to buy a mini excavator. Or to hire a part-time executive director. Or to buy a shed full of tools, with enough money left over to buy a year’s worth of pizza to feed your volunteer trail builders.

File photo: Mike Cartier. I don’t know about you, but the moment I arrive at a mountain bike trailhead, I’m a ball of anxious energy, raring to ride. It’s the same feeling I used to get pulling into the parking lot at Six Flags and seeing the throngs of people who arrived before me. These days, I’m lucky if I remember to put my helmet on before I zoom onto the trail! But lately, I’ve been thinking that my pre-ride routine might be missing something. Should I be stretching? Warming up? Meditating?

Is the Maxxis Dissector an upgrade over the Minion DHR II? [Review]
Photos: Travis Reill Like a lot of people who land on the more aggressive side of trail bike riding, my go-to tire combo is a Maxxis Assegai up front and a DHR II out back. Do I believe these are the very best tires one can buy? Not necessarily, but they are damn good, are common on many bikes, and are likely the tire combo I have the most experience with. “Best” is relative. But what about switching that tried-and-true DHR with the new Dissector?
