The seasonally adjusted Absa Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) declined from 47.3 points to 46.8 in July 2026. At first glance, this suggests a weak start to the third quarter. However, the headline decline arguably overstates the weakness in underlying manufacturing conditions. Most notably, domestic demand improved and lifted new sales orders.
