Short week—not many auctions the next several days. But I found hitters. First, housekeeping: I’ve been holding weekly workouts at Columbus Park in Chinatown Manhattan—calisthenics, open to all levels. Info can be found here. Usually at noon; this Sunday it’ll be at 10 in the morning. I’m doing a closet sale this weekend in Chinatown: vintage, designer, big sizes. Here is the info: Lots of American vintage.
Obs 152: Where is design's tyranny of small differences?
"Where u at" by Krutch" Mini essay today. I went to a couple of design events this week but was not taking notes. There’s a new USM Haller set of record shelves (done with Symbol) that are strong. A bit on the nose but useful. I’m not sure the price point but there isn’t much for explicit record shelving with a point of view outside Ikea’s Expedit/Kallax shelves at the more accessible end of the spectrum, and bespoke stuff (Vitsoe) at the higher end.
Obs 151: Breuer taxonomy, singer's S-tier apartment, ranking best coat racks
Hello. Monday, lots of furniture ahead, let’s get to business. This Breuer B46 chair—a perfect specimen, designed in 1929 (when Breuer was 26, 27), big saggy ass, either leather or eisengarn (waxed cotton) probably produced by Thonet, maybe one produced for the Hotel Metropole in Brussels where this one took up—looks not unlike his other chairs but with small differences. An inversion of his B64?
Obs 150: Napkin sketch furniture from a Pritzker winner
Good afternoon readers, lots of action, lots furniture. Pics are all stuff for sale; not out of reach shit. First up: And that’s bullshit. Knoll butterfly stool, Long Island, Wed.: A classic shape, for sure, similar to the Ny chair and other camp pieces, but a curious piece specifically based on auction description and detail. How’s a piece of furniture from the 50s/60s—this design is actually from 1938, by Jorge Hardoy; this production is from the 1960s—this color? Very bright, futuristic.
Obs 149.5: Rush job
Howdy y’all, a ton of furniture ending today and over the weekend. Sending a quick missive on today’s lots before the full letter goes out. Sapper egg timer, Westport, $50: Part of a regularly tremendous auction from Westport full of high and low-level items; a Picasso-ripoff Kosta Boda vase (similar eyes but a little too maximalist on t…
Obs 149: Four questions when deciding on a piece
Hello, lots of furniture this week: let’s get after it. Not at Salone will be there next year. Rummaging around my search terms and finding dozens of pieces of strong furniture for readers I was thinking about the math of deciding on a piece of furniture. What’s the mental calculation that helps you determine whether to cop or drop? With clothing it’s either simpler or we have more experience in figuring it out.
Obs 148: Two new elite furniture retail shops in NYC
Hello gang. Beautiful week of furniture. It’s like 80 degrees out. Salone is going on—I’m not there because it’s interfering with my workouts. What can I say? A couple newer furniture stores to check out in Brooklyn, one newish and one very new. First is Lanoba, a mostly Danish/teak MCM purveyor in Wallabout BK. Only open on weekends, only noon to 4. Not exactly new but new to this newsletter.
Observer 147: How to ID non-designer luxury pieces
This guy’s cool. Anyone know him? Had so much furniture this week I had to split it into two parts.
Obs 146: archival wood IKEA? Bode's lettering inspo? And this awesome Kraut designer
Hello—lots of action this week… Onto the furniture. It’s not much but it’s honest joinery Vintage Rosewood Ikea piece, Ct.: Rare to see old Ikea on auction—only one’ listed in the past year, only one sold before (this sideboard). Rarer still to see a wooden one either on auction or on display. Didn’t know they made this; rosewood, no designer name. A terrific piece, doing a couple things at once; It’s from the 1960s…. anything from the past 45 years; no way it’s happening.
Obs 145: Gwyneth sells her furniture; Versace plates
Hello. Snake is a vintage and furniture letter, ramblings up top, intelligence and sourcing below the jump. Taix, the French restaurant in LA (nice ambiance, big) is DONE and are auctioning off its interiors. The auction is hinted atin this thorough LA Times piece about the restaurant’s last dayz. Here’s the auction link—take a lookat what’s on the block.
