Author: Veena Giridhar Gopal AI has the potential to reshape how the consumer goods sector operates, especially legacy brands. Legacy brands hold decades of product records, sales data, trade terms, creative assets, retailer submissions, production schedules, production data and supply data. Much of this is untagged, inconsistent or duplicated.

A report published last year in collaboration between Microsoft and Public First forecast that digital technologies including AI and cloud computing could increase GDP by over £550bn in the next decade. However, when you start to look beyond the eye-catching (and eye-watering) numbers, there are a number of vital questions that should be being asked. Not least, how capable and well set up is the UK’s tech ecosystem to be able to achieve this?

Amongst the hype, there are real benefits for AI use in our services. But how should we use technology most effectively to improve the public sector? UK government figures show that archaic technology costs the public sector £45 billionHistorically, this kind of figure has been framed as a reason to cut costs. But that’s short-sighted because the real potential lies in using technology to increase productivity, unlock capacity, and deliver better services. Public services are under immense pressure.
