Two girls in a small town in the USA kill time together as they try to get through their days at school. They watch videos, share earbuds as they play each other songs, and exchange their stories. In the process, they form a deep connection and an unexpected relationship begins to develop.

The artistic bravery and brilliance of Carol Tyler—newly inducted into the Will Eisner Awards Hall of Fame—were vividly demonstrated in last year’s exhibition, Write It Down, Draw It Out, at the Ohio State’s Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum. I was lucky to see that show, a distillation of Tyler’s career story to date.

A confession, dear reader: I, too, from time to time, find myself assailed by sinful thoughts.

There is a slope outside Brentonico, a village of four thousand souls in the Trentino province, where every year a wheel of cheese is released down the hillside and a small crowd of locals runs after it. This “race” is called formaggio rotolante or ruzzolone del formaggio. The rules are simple: chase the cheese, do not break your neck, and whoever reaches the bottom of the hill first wins something that does not particularly matter.

PIECES OF ME is a graphic memoir in progress about the onset of psychosis and the long recovery period afterwards. It is told through a series of visual metaphors and real-life events that emphasize Maia Iotzova’s growing disconnection and break from reality. There are two distinct parts of the book. The first part, describing the onset of the psychotic break, is primarily a silent comic.

Joe Sacco warns us, in the first few pages of The Once and Future Riot, exactly what kind of epistemological swamp we’re wading into. Like many of Sacco’s previous comics, this is a work of journalism and history; it’s an attempt to excavate the precise circumstances of a 2013 outbreak of sectarian violence that pit Hindu Jats against Muslims in the Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh in northern India.

And Lonergan said, let there be CMYK, and there was CMYK. Everything you need to know about Drome is right there, on the book’s very first page. Before you even reach the table of contents, Jesse Lonergan has revealed his hand. A blank page, save for four blocks of color: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black placed in a grid and separated by gutters.

Group 1 two-panel comics is a series of comics done in just two panels. It explores the ability of comics to tell complete stories in a short amount of space/time due to the relationship between illustration, text, and gutters. Sydney Heifler is a comics creator and scholar located in Columbus, Ohio. Her comics focus on lived experience, memory, the use of comics creation in healing, and experimenting with the comics form. She is currently a Ph.D. Candidate at the Ohio State University.

You know it’s not going to work out from the very first line. Panel one, page one of Cam Marshall’s Flying Saucer Video informs us that the titular DVD rental store shuttered its doors in 2020. This event – which occurs one year in the future from the actual start of the comic’s plot – contextualizes the bubbly, delightful world Marshall builds across the comic’s first arc.

In an unnamed country, air heavy with the heat of imminent uprising, the decision to go running alone after dark sets in motion a chain of chances and choices that change everybody they touch. Cai, sculptor at an arts residency in an upscale resort, and his colleague Lisa, a local working as his aide, are drawn into a complex series of events in which myth rises in the shadow of politics and the bright lights of festive fireworks.
