We’re less than 30 days from kickoff, and I’ve been racking my brain for the perfect theme for this year’s UCF Knights football season. Then it hit me like a perfectly timed blitz: 2025 is basically 2016 with a fresh coat of paint. Seriously—cue the déjà vu. The Knights are coming off a forgettable 4–8 season, despite having talent that deserved better. Enter Scott Frost, back in the saddle as head coach after an eight-year detour through Nebraska and the NFL.

With the current state of college football, I know that a lot of my fellow UCF fans are over it all and have adopted the mindset of “Just tell me who’s on the roster for opening weekend.” Now that we’re about a month out from the 2025 football season, I’m here to tell you who’s gonna be on the roster for opening weekend. I get that it’s the wild west still and anything can still happen, but I’m gonna take a crack at it anyway.

The UCF Knights football team is undergoing a period of transition in 2025. While there is excitement for the new regime led by Head Coach Scott Frost, there are also a lot of questions and unknowns. Let’s review some of the main ones, ABC style: Alex Grinch – The new Knights defensive coordinator comes to Orlando two years removed from being fired in-season as the USC Trojans defensive coordinator.

Big 12 Media Days were held July 8th and 9th at The Star in Frisco, Texas, the training home of the Dallas Cowboys. The Sons of UCF were one of only a handful of local media outlets to be in attendance for the event, which features players, coaches, and administrators from all sixteen teams coming together to talk about the upcoming season (commonly referred to as ‘talking season’).

The 2025 Big 12 Media Days wrapped up this week, and as expected, there was no shortage of storylines. Commissioner Brett Yormark doubled down on the 5+1 College Football Playoff model, boldly claiming that the Big 12 is, “leading the charge” on the initiative. Whether that’s confidence or creative branding, we’ll let history decide. NFL Hall of Famer and Dallas Cowboys legend Michael Irvin made an appearance to support Colorado head coach Deion Sanders—because of course he did.

As UCF prepares for year three in the Big 12 conference, UCF VP and Director of Athletics Terry Mohajir is excited about what the Knights have accomplished, but knows there is still work to be done. “We’re at halftime, and we need to make some halftime adjustments,” said Mohajir in a wide-ranging interview with the Sons of UCF. Whatever those adjustments might be, it looks like Mohajir will be staying around UCF for at least the next two years to see them through.

With the end of spring camp on the horizon, deciding who will be the leader of the new Scott Frost led football team may not be fully answered by the end of the week . To make matters more interesting, the spring transfer portal opens on April 16th, which will bring some interesting decisions. Several players have already entered, ending their story with the Knights, while others face adversity in the form of injuries or uncertainty.

With the return of spring practice after a week off for spring break, the UCF Football team continued to build on developing their team identity as the ready for the regular season. Last week gave us insight as to the veteran vs. newcomer mentality, who is standing out at the tight end and safety positions, and of course, where the quarterback battle stands.

Spirits were high following the first weekend of conference play. The UCF Knights were coming off a series win and following the midweek victory over Stetson, sat at a robust 16-4 record having won 10 of 11. Despite getting out of the frigid elements played through up in Provo, the Knight bats have remained in the cold. Within only three days of practice, head coach Scott Frost has made it clear what he expects to see out of his new team. Effort and basic fundamentals. Frost stressed that his expectations were relatively low this first week of spring practice, so there was no surprise when players showed some sloppiness on the field. “We got some good things and just a bunch of sloppiness that we gotta clean up, but that’s why we practice,” Frost said in a post-practice press conference.
