‘Swamp pop' band Rootbeer Richie plays Wednesday at the Lagoon
The next installment of the Lagoon Concert Series features Rootbeer Richie, an eight-piece band with a signature sound inspired by legends like Ray Charles, Lee Dorsey, Fats Domino and Sam Cooke. Its soulful rhythm and blues blends a unique “swamp pop” sound featuring a New Orleans rhythm and blues backbeat on the bass and the drums, rock ‘n’ roll style guitars, thumpin’ piano, horns and heavily belted lovelorn lyrics that are sure to have you on your feet all night.
Funk band Titonic closes out Lagoon Concert Series July 22
Titonic is set to perform from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22. The final installment of the Lagoon Concert Series for 2026 features Titonic, a Fort Collins-based band known for its energetic mix of soul, funk and classic rock. Titonic – known for performing James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Tower of Power, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers – is set to take the stage from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, near the Lagoon on the corner of West Plum Street and Meridian Avenue.
Catalyst Go Program to support six interdisciplinary research teams in pursuit of large, high-impact funding opportunities
Beginning this summer, six interdisciplinary teams from across Colorado State University will leverage internal funding and engagement support from the Office of the Vice President for Research to better pursue large, center-scale funding opportunities. The funding was awarded through the Catalyst Go Program – hosted by the Research Acceleration Office – after an open competition for teams with strong demonstrated potential and readiness.
New ‘President’s Working Group on Compensation’ to identify ways to keep CSU competitive
President Amy Parsons has convened a new Working Group on Compensation to make recommendations for a comprehensive strategy to ensure that CSU remains competitive in recruiting and retaining faculty and staff. Institutional competitiveness is one of the five key priorities Parsons identified for CSU when she began serving as president in 2023.
Usama Alshaibi’s documentary film premieres on PBS today
Usama Alshaibi Usama Alshaibi, a teaching professor in CSU’s Department of Communication Studies, produced a documentary short film, Trip Ziggurat, that reveals his discovery of a religious pyramid in an unlikely mountainous setting in Colorado. The film will premiere on PBS today, July 9, as part of the broadcaster’s AMERICA @ 250 campaign. Trip Ziggurat follows Alshaibi, an Iraqi-American filmmaker, as he discovers a ziggurat in the mountains of Colorado.
New liaison role helps connect CSU and the City of Fort Collins
Colorado State University and the City of Fort Collins have long committed to supporting a joint community liaison position focused on ensuring a high quality of life in neighborhoods with a high mix of students and residents. This position is being re-aligned in 2026 to serve as a front-line connector among neighborhoods, as well as across Fort Collins and Colorado State University.
Researchers ready to boost Hurricane Hunters with machine learning upgrades
Colorado State University’s renowned tropical cyclone team has received a grant to improve forecasting and warnings for NOAA’s Hurricane Hunters in dangerous tropical storms. Professor Michael Bell’s Tropical Cyclones, Radar, Atmospheric Modeling, and Software team in the Department of Atmospheric Science will use machine learning to improve NOAA’s airborne Doppler radar data processing pipeline, particularly the quality control software that makes the information available.
