The one time I don’t get embargoed convention news, there are four huge Star Wars book announcements. Good thing I have a preternatural response to breaking news, thanks to my decade of work in newsrooms. Anyway, in case you missed it — this weekend’s Lucasfilm Publishing panel at New York Comic Con revealed two new Star Wars novels, a new manga, and a comic series that continues the stories of Phase 2 of The High Republic.

Happy San Diego Comic-Con week to all who celebrate. And happy Star Wars publishing panel day! Today’s Lucasfilm Publishing panel was full of comic reveals, art, and spreads from highly-anticipated new titles. As promised in Wednesday’s newsletter, I got the scoop on everything revealed at the panel. Thank you, Disney Books! There is another Star Wars books panel at 1 p.m. PT/ 4 p.m. ET with Random House Worlds, but I didn’t get any details from that early. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for news.

We know how this story ends. We know the evil Galactic Empire is defeated for good by the courageous Rebel Alliance. We know the Jedi are (somewhat) redeemed and reborn several times — now, supposedly led by a new Skywalker. But Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear isn’t that story. It doesn’t even star the biggest figures in the Skywalker Saga. Still, it’s one of the most political poignant, reflective, and important Star Wars stories this side of Andor.

We’ve got some exciting new Star Wars books coming this year, and many of them are part of the final phase of The High Republic, which celebrated three years of storytelling last week. It’s a new year, which means new Star Wars books are on the horizon. So far, nine Star Wars books have been announced for 2024. That includes five High Republic books and three Essential Legends reprints. And because it’s only (checks watch) Jan. 3, there will likely be more books announced in the coming months.
